Metro Ticketing Launch on Uber’s Platform
Metro ticketing is now available on Uber’s platform, allowing commuters in Delhi to purchase their tickets directly through the Uber app. This initiative, enabled by the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), marks the first collaboration of the ride-hailing service with India’s advanced digital public infrastructure network.
The new feature will initially launch in the capital city, with plans to expand to three more cities across India by 2025. Additionally, Uber has announced plans to introduce B2B Logistics through ONDC, which will allow businesses to utilise Uber’s on-demand delivery network without needing to maintain their own fleets.
This integration follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2024 during the visit of Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi to India, solidifying Uber’s commitment to enhancing India’s digital ecosystem. The company remarked that this launch is a significant step toward fulfilling its mission of fostering urban mobility that is more inclusive, sustainable, and seamlessly connected.
Comments from Uber and ONDC Officials
Praveen Neppalli Naga, Chief Technology Officer at Uber, expressed that India’s impressive advancements in population-scale technology through initiatives like ONDC excite the company. He remarked that the integration of metro ticketing into the Uber app brings the company closer to its vision of being a comprehensive solution for mobility requirements.
Vibhor Jain, Acting CEO and COO of ONDC, characterised Uber’s entry into the network as a landmark improvement in expanding access to reliable, interoperable digital infrastructure in India. He noted that Uber’s initial provision of metro ticketing and logistics not only opens new avenues for seamless multimodal travel but also helps unify a fragmented logistics ecosystem. This partnership lays a strong foundation for future innovations from Uber on the Network, enhancing value for users, partners, and the broader mobility and services landscape.
Enhanced Commuting Experience for Delhi Users
Effective immediately, users of the Uber app in Delhi can now plan their metro journeys, acquire QR-based tickets, and obtain real-time transit information—all within the app. This development brings the city closer to attaining a fully integrated digital transport experience.
