Instagram Referrals for Creators: Earn Up to $20,000

Instagram is now introducing a referral programme aimed at creators in the US, allowing them to potentially earn up to $20,000 by attracting new users to its application. This initiative is part of Instagram’s strategy to compete effectively against platforms like TikTok and YouTube. The programme, named “Referrals,” incentivises creators to generate new sign-ups and visits by sharing links outside the Instagram app.

Details of the Instagram Referrals Programme

The invitation-only programme, as confirmed by Instagram to Business Insider, is set to run for six weeks from May to June. Creators are given the opportunity to earn in two different methods, with a maximum earnings limit of $20,000. Some participants are receiving $100 for each eligible new user who registers on Instagram via their unique links, while others can earn $100 for every 1,000 “eligible visits” to the app. Payment for these earnings is facilitated by a third-party partner known as Glimmer.

Promoting Instagram Beyond Its Platform

The primary goal of this initiative is to motivate creators to promote Instagram on competing platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Discord, and Substack. Screenshots procured by Business Insider indicate that participants are encouraged to “share your Instagram profile, reels, posts, stories, and channels ‘off Instagram’.”

Strategic Moves Amidst Fierce Competition

Instagram’s recent actions form part of a broader series of testing initiatives and incentive programs designed to retain creators on the platform, particularly as rivals like TikTok continue to attract talent with their own enticing offers. Earlier in the year, Instagram introduced a “Breakthrough Bonus” intended for creators transitioning from TikTok and also entered exclusive content agreements worth up to $50,000 a month for specific high-profile creators.

Industry Trends in Referral and Bonus Schemes

Referral and bonus schemes appear to be rapidly becoming standard across the industry, highlighted by TikTok’s recent rollout of similar referral rewards, which include financial incentives and shopping discounts for users inviting friends to join.

Availability and Future Prospects

The existing “Referrals” programme is limited to selected creators in the United States, with Meta yet to disclose whether it will expand this opportunity or introduce it as a permanent feature. This timing aligns with the Federal Trade Commission’s scrutiny of Meta’s practices in the social media domain, where competition for user engagement is increasingly intense.
