App Store Fraud Prevention Efforts by Apple

App Store fraud prevention has been a priority for Apple, with the company reporting an impressive figure of over $9 billion prevented in fraudulent transactions over the past five years, including more than $2 billion in 2024 alone. This analysis illustrates Apple’s commitment to ensuring the App Store remains a secure destination for both users and developers, reflecting the ongoing challenge of combating evolving threats.

With a remarkable 813 million weekly visitors, the App Store continues to be a reliable marketplace for app discovery and transactions across 175 regions globally. Upholding this reputation necessitates proactive strategies to stay ahead of malicious actors using more sophisticated methods, such as phishing applications, payment scams, fake reviews, and account fraud.

Robust Anti-Fraud Measures

Apple’s anti-fraud technology is engineered to swiftly identify and eradicate malicious activities. In 2024, the company cancelled over 146,000 developer accounts due to fraudulent behaviour and rejected an additional 139,000 suspicious developer applications. Apple also blocked more than 711 million potentially fraudulent account creations and deactivated nearly 129 million risky accounts, reinforcing the integrity of ratings, reviews, and app search results.

Beyond the App Store

The vigilance of Apple extends to preventing unauthorised applications as well. Last year, the company blocked over 10,000 illegitimate apps distributed through pirate websites, which included malware, gambling content, and pirated versions of legitimate applications. Additionally, 4.6 million attempts to install or launch unauthorised apps outside of the App Store or approved third-party platforms were successfully halted.

Comprehensive App Review Process

Every application submitted to the App Store undergoes thorough automated and human evaluations. In 2024, Apple reviewed over 7.7 million app submissions, with more than 1.9 million being rejected for not fulfilling criteria regarding security, reliability, and user experience. This included 400,000 apps turned away for privacy violations and over 320,000 for being spam, copycat, or otherwise misleading.

To tackle deceptive methods, like hidden features and bait-and-switch tactics, Apple’s review team removed more than 37,000 apps for fraudulent activity and rejected over 43,000 submissions due to undisclosed or hidden functionalities. The company also remains alert to developers attempting to manipulate app charts and search visibility.

Maintaining Trust with Ratings and Reviews

Fraudulent ratings and reviews can distort app visibility and damage consumer trust. In 2024, Apple processed 1.2 billion ratings and reviews, eliminating over 143 million that were identified as fraudulent. Furthermore, the company removed more than 7,400 apps from App Store charts and nearly 9,500 deceptive applications from search results, promoting a fair environment for legitimate developers.

Securing Payments and Purchases

Payment fraud and credit card misuse are ongoing critical concerns for Apple. In 2024, the company successfully prevented over $2 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions, detected 4.7 million stolen credit cards, and banned more than 1.6 million accounts from future transactions. The in-app purchase system, comprising Apple Pay and StoreKit, is designed to deliver enhanced security and privacy for over 420,000 apps, ensuring that all transactions are authenticated, encrypted, and monitored against fraud.
