Apple’s New Gaming App: A Revolution in Cross-Platform Gaming

Apple’s new gaming app is poised to revolutionise the gaming landscape with its anticipated introduction at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on 9 June 2025. This innovative cross-platform gaming app will replace the long-standing Game Center, marking Apple’s most ambitious effort in the gaming sector, encompassing iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple TV devices.

According to reports from Bloomberg, this new standalone app will serve as a central hub for launching games, tracking achievements, accessing leaderboards, and engaging with tailored editorial content. The app aims to harmonise the gaming experience throughout Apple’s ecosystem and will be pre-installed with the upcoming software updates, potentially referred to as iOS 19 or iOS 26, based on recent adjustments in the naming protocol.

This enhanced gaming platform from Apple is expected to draw significant inspiration from both Microsoft’s Xbox app and Google Play Games. It might accommodate titles from the App Store alongside those available via Apple Arcade, Apple’s gaming subscription service priced at £6.99 per month (or ₹99 per month in India). In addition to improving discovery and user engagement, the app may also incorporate communication features through FaceTime and iMessage, facilitating smoother remote multiplayer sessions.

In a notable departure from its traditionally insular ecosystem, Apple may allow the Mac version of the app to support games obtained from external sources outside the App Store. This move signals Apple’s intention to position macOS as a more competitive alternative to Windows PCs, which have been the cornerstone of the gaming domain for years.

Reinforcing its commitment to gaming, Apple has recently acquired RAC7 Games, the indie studio known for creating Sneaky Sasquatch, one of Apple Arcade’s earliest and most popular titles. This acquisition emphasises a growing emphasis on developing in-house gaming content and original intellectual property.

As the new app is set to replace Game Center as the primary interface for gaming, it is likely that existing user profiles will be integrated rather than eliminated. There are also suggestions that the app could support App Clips for mini-games, providing users with instant access to quick gaming experiences.
