LinkedIn Layoffs: 281 Employees Affected Amid Tech Industry Changes
LinkedIn has reported layoffs impacting 281 employees in California, illustrating the ongoing trend among tech giants to downsize amidst continuous industry restructuring. This reduction was confirmed in a recent communication to the state’s employment department, with software engineers, senior product managers, and talent account directors significantly affected.
Job Cuts Following Microsoft’s Decisions
These layoffs follow Microsoft’s announcement about cutting approximately 6,000 jobs, which represents about 3% of its global workforce, as part of comprehensive efforts to optimise operations. This series of job reductions indicates persistent challenges within the tech sector, as organisations reassess their priorities and aim for greater efficiency.
Previous Layoffs at LinkedIn
LinkedIn, a prominent platform for professional networking and recruitment, has experienced multiple rounds of layoffs over the past year. In October 2023, the organisation eliminated 668 positions within its engineering, talent, and finance divisions. Prior to this, in May 2023, 716 jobs were removed from sales, operations, and support teams, a strategy aimed at simplifying the organisation and enhancing decision-making speed.
Industry-wide Turbulence
The tech industry at large continues to experience similar uncertainties. For instance, Google downsized its global business unit by 200 employees in May, particularly impacting teams in sales and partnerships. Furthermore, parent company Meta announced earlier this year significant changes, including the layoff of 3,600 staff, or 5% of its workforce, primarily from Facebook, Horizon VR, and logistics divisions, following a reform in performance evaluation processes.
Apple’s Staff Reduction
Apple has also faced challenges, recently letting go of 100 employees within its digital services arm in August 2024. Teams from Apple Books, Apple Bookstore, and Apple News were particularly affected by this reduction.
