Redmi Pad 2: The Ultimate Budget Tablet Under ₹20,000 in India

The sub-₹20,000 tablet segment in India has been quite stagnant lately, primarily led by variations of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A series and various budget Android versions. However, Xiaomi aims to transform this situation with the Redmi Pad 2, an affordable yet impressively refined device that offers much more than just a large screen at a budget-friendly price. Launched in India this week, it aspires to set a new standard in the budget tablet category.

Redmi Pad 2: A Meaningful Upgrade

Let’s clarify one thing: this tablet is not merely a simple update or rebranding. The Redmi Pad 2 comes with significant rethinking, featuring thoughtful hardware selections, Xiaomi’s newly developed HyperOS 2, and accessories that feel purposeful. Starting at ₹12,999 (accompanied by attractive introductory offers with HDFC), it decisively takes aim at Samsung’s Tab A9 and even entry-level iPads for various use scenarios.

Display and Design: Unmatched at This Price

At the heart of the Redmi Pad 2 lies its impressive 11-inch 2.5K (2560 × 1600) LCD screen. This display is not just sharp; it’s smooth as well, boasting a 90Hz refresh rate, 10-bit colour, and brightness up to 600 nits in outdoor mode. Given the price point, this is truly remarkable. Additionally, with TÜV Rheinland certifications that ensure low blue light, flicker-free viewing, and circadian-friendly colour calibration, it presents a genuinely pleasant experience for binge-watching, reading, or long study sessions.

In terms of construction, the tablet shines with its sleek design, measuring just 7.36mm thick and weighing a mere 510g (519g for the cellular version). It feels robust, exuding quality rather than a cheap impression. The Graphite Grey and Mint Green hues look subtle, while a new Lavender Purple option adds a vibrant touch for those who prefer colours beyond the monochrome.

Performance: Impressively Reliable

The Redmi Pad 2 is equipped with the MediaTek Helio G100 Ultra chipset, comprising an octa-core configuration that includes two Cortex-A76 cores alongside six Cortex-A55 cores, supported by Mali-G57 MC2 graphics. While it is not a high-end chip, it manages daily tasks—whether it’s using YouTube, Google Docs, Netflix, or playing casual games like Asphalt—exceptionally well, easily handling multitasking.

Users have the option of up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, with an impressive capacity for expandable microSD storage of up to 2TB. Furthermore, the addition of virtual RAM up to 8GB further ensures smooth performance. Even the base model with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage priced at ₹12,999 is entirely usable, but the ₹16,999 variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage offers a considerably better long-term investment.

HyperOS 2: A Noteworthy Feature

Being Xiaomi’s first budget tablet in India to use Xiaomi HyperOS 2, this platform indeed makes a significant impact. It is lightweight and well-optimised while introducing cross-device features such as Call sync, Shared clipboard, and Network sync among Xiaomi phones and tablets.

With no ads and minimal bloatware, the interface proves to be surprisingly intuitive. HyperOS appears to be what MIUI always aimed for but seldom achieved.

Battery Life: Extensive and Reliable

Equipped with a 9000mAh battery, the Redmi Pad 2 is built for longevity. In typical mixed-use scenarios, which include browsing, streaming, and reading, it easily achieves 10-11 hours of screen time. Standby drain is minimal, and even when under significant load with a demanding screen and background sync, the battery remains resilient.

While the 18W fast charging (with a 15W adapter included in the box) might not be the fastest available, this is an understandable compromise given the price, especially since it utilises USB-C rather than an outdated micro-USB connection.

Audio and Multimedia: Exceeding Expectations

One of the most pleasant surprises is the quad-speaker arrangement featuring Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio certification. The volume can be quite loud without distortion, and stereo separation remains clear, even without headphones. Combined with the vivid display, this tablet stands out as one of the finest media options under ₹20,000.

Cameras and Accessories: Practical Choices

While the cameras might not win any accolades, they serve their purpose adequately. The 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera perform as expected: Zoom calls are clear, and document scans are legible. Notably, the front camera is located on the long edge, making it sensible for landscape video calls—a small detail that proves to be quite useful.

Furthermore, Xiaomi has not cut corners with accessories. The Redmi Smart Pen (priced at ₹3,999) offers an enjoyable experience for note-taking and sketches, with 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. The Redmi Pad 2 Cover (retailing at ₹1,299) features sleep/wake functionality and can double as a stand, making it ideal for students and remote workers.

Connectivity and Durability: Considered Features

Unlike many tablets in this price range, the Wi-Fi + Cellular version supports dual SIM, GPS, and maintains the same sturdy aluminium build. With an IP52 rating, it also provides resistance against light splashes and dust, an advantage in the Indian environment. Additionally, it includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, built-in microphone, and robust Wi-Fi ac support.

Redmi Pad 2: A Leading Choice for Budget Android Tablets in 2025

Certainly, the Redmi Pad 2 does not aim to cover every possible feature; however, it excels in what it sets out to accomplish. It features a sharp and immersive display, reliable everyday performance, seamless cross-device synchronization, extended battery life, and competent speakers. This tablet truly understands the specific needs of the Indian budget consumer without sacrificing quality.

For students, casual users, or anyone seeking an efficient tablet under ₹20,000, the Redmi Pad 2 currently holds the crown as the top contender in this segment.
