Emirates Partners with Crypto.com for Digital Asset Payments
Emirates has entered into a preliminary agreement with the cryptocurrency platform Crypto.com to facilitate digital asset payments for its services. This initiative aims to enhance the airline’s appeal to a younger, tech-oriented clientele.
Details of the Partnership
The collaboration is set to launch next year, incorporating Crypto.com Pay into Emirates’ payment systems, pending necessary regulatory approvals and compliance checks, as outlined by the airline’s parent company in a recent statement.
Adnan Kazim, the Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer of Emirates, mentioned that this strategic initiative aligns with Dubai’s ambition to lead in financial innovation while offering customers improved flexibility and choices in transactions with Emirates.
Key Signatories and Future Plans
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalised in Dubai, attended by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group. The partnership will also investigate collaborative marketing initiatives to promote awareness and implementation of this new payment option.
The Growing Crypto Landscape in the UAE
The UAE has evolved into a prominent hub for the global cryptocurrency industry, with authorities like the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in Dubai regulating the sector since 2022. A variety of applications have already emerged, including cryptocurrency payments for real estate, educational fees, and transportation services.
One of the most significant crypto ecosystems in the region is situated within the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), home to over 650 crypto firms currently operating in the area.
Other Airlines Exploring Digital Currencies
Several airlines in the region have begun to explore the use of digital currencies. In May, Dubai-listed Air Arabia announced it would start accepting AE Coin, a stablecoin backed by the UAE dirham, for flight bookings.
Eric Anziani, President and COO of Crypto.com, remarked that the agreement with Emirates would facilitate the adoption of digital assets for everyday transactions and solidify the company’s presence in the Gulf region.
