WhatsApp Introduces Safety Overview Tool to Enhance Group Security

WhatsApp has unveiled a new feature known as the ‘Safety Overview’ tool, designed to improve group safety and assist users in steering clear of potential scams. This feature activates when someone outside a user’s contact list adds them to an unfamiliar group. It presents vital information about the group and offers safety advice, enabling users to exit without needing to engage with the chat. Notifications from these groups will remain muted unless the user opts to participate.

Enhanced Caution with Unknown Contacts

The platform, owned by Meta, is also trialling alerts that encourage users to think twice before interacting with unknown contacts, particularly if the initial communication occurred outside of WhatsApp. These notifications will provide additional context regarding the individual being messaged, equipping users to make better-informed decisions.

Combatting Criminal Activities

WhatsApp asserts that these initiatives are part of a larger strategy to combat criminal scam centres, frequently associated with forced labour and organised crime in Southeast Asia. In the first half of 2025, security teams from WhatsApp and Meta detected and banned over 6.8 million accounts linked to these operations, often before they could become active.

Collaborative Efforts against Scams

In a recent instance, WhatsApp, Meta, and OpenAI collaborated to dismantle a scam centre located in Cambodia. This operation involved fraudulent payment schemes for likes, pyramid-style scooter rentals, and scams focusing on cryptocurrency investments. Scammers reportedly utilised ChatGPT to create their initial contact message, subsequently guiding victims to Telegram for task assignments and eventually soliciting cryptocurrency deposits.

WhatsApp advises users to pause and consider before responding to any suspicious messages, particularly those from unknown numbers that promise quick financial returns. The platform recommends safety practices including the activation of two-step verification, blocking and reporting dubious accounts, silencing unknown callers, and ensuring the usage of the official app.
