Starlink Expands Satellite Broadband Services in India
Starlink, the satellite internet provider owned by Elon Musk, is making significant advancements in expanding its satellite broadband services in India. The company has partnered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to implement Aadhaar-based authentication for customer verification, enhancing the onboarding process with quicker, more secure, and entirely paperless KYC checks.
This initiative follows the government officially permitting Starlink to introduce satellite internet services within the nation. With its current capacity, the company aims to bring nearly 20 lakh customers on board.
Collaboration and Regulatory Compliance
Starlink has been designated as both a Sub-Authentication User Agency and Sub-eKYC User Agency. The agreement was formalised with the presence of UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, Deputy Director General Manish Bhardwaj, and Starlink India Director Parnil Urdhwareshe.
Enhanced Customer Experience
By integrating with Aadhaar, regarded as one of the most dependable digital identity systems, Starlink seeks to provide a seamless experience for its customers while adhering to India’s regulatory frameworks. Importantly, the use of Aadhaar will remain optional for customers, consistent with current regulations.
The Role of Digital Infrastructure
This partnership illustrates how India’s digital public infrastructure is becoming a foundation for international enterprises. An official statement noted that “Starlink’s onboarding with Aadhaar authentication signifies a powerful synergy: India’s trusted digital identity joining hands with global satellite technology.”
Partnerships with Indian Telecom Giants
In addition to its collaboration with UIDAI, Starlink is also joining forces with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to extend its services to households, institutions, and businesses throughout India. By combining satellite connectivity with Aadhaar e-KYC, the company aims to accelerate the adoption of high-speed internet even in the most remote regions of the country.
