Instagram Introduces Picture-in-Picture Feature for Reels
Instagram has initiated testing of its Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature for Reels, enabling users to watch videos in a floating window while browsing other applications. The platform, owned by Meta, verified the test to TechCrunch on Tuesday.
How the Picture-in-Picture Feature Works
The feature, initially identified by app researcher Radu Oncescu, alerts selected users with a pop-up that details the activation process. With PiP, Reels can play in the background, allowing viewers the freedom to respond to messages, scroll through X, or engage with different apps without interrupting their video experience.
Enhancing Viewer Engagement
This capability is particularly beneficial for longer Reels, where viewer engagement may otherwise wane. By enabling video playback during multitasking, Instagram seeks to assist creators in maintaining their audiences’ attention for more extended content.
Competing with Rivals
Platforms like TikTok and YouTube already feature Picture-in-Picture, and Instagram’s initiative reflects its intention to enhance user experience to rival these competitors. For creators, this enhancement could lead to improved viewer retention rates, while Instagram stands to gain from increased user engagement and prolonged in-app activity.
Future of Picture-in-Picture on Instagram
The trial comes after remarks from Instagram head Adam Mosseri earlier this year. When queried about the PiP feature, Mosseri articulated his intention to “discuss with the team to explore possibilities.”
Currently, the feature remains in a testing phase with a limited number of users. Instagram has yet to confirm if the PiP functionality will be available to all users on a global scale.
