Impact Investing with Accion Ventures: $61.6 Million Fund for Fintech Innovation

Impact investing is at the forefront as Accion Ventures has successfully closed its second early-stage fund, securing $61.6 million. This fund is particularly dedicated to advancing financial inclusion via fintech innovation. Under the newly branded Accion Ventures initiative, the fund aims to bolster early-stage fintech startups that cater to underserved populations on a global scale.

Strategic Focus on Indian Startups

A significant aspect of this fund is its commitment to allocate 30% of capital specifically towards Indian startups. Accion Ventures has previously made notable investments in India, backing companies such as Aye Finance, which focuses on MSME lending, Olyv, previously known as SmartCoin, catering to consumer lending, and TransBnk, which provides fintech infrastructure.

Diverse Emerging Markets Targeted

Accion Ventures is set to distribute its capital across a variety of emerging markets, including regions in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the United States. The aim is to target up to 30 new fintech investments worldwide. Their investment strategy prioritises companies that are positioned for both substantial social impact and robust financial returns. This is especially true for businesses leveraging embedded finance, alternative data, and digital solutions to assist underserved communities.

Since 2012, Accion’s investment arm has channeled over $59 million into 76 companies across more than 30 countries, marking considerable success, including several complete or partial exits.
