WhatsApp Unveils Message Translation Feature for Android and iPhone Users

WhatsApp Introduces Message Translations for Global Users

WhatsApp has unveiled message translations, a feature aimed at overcoming language barriers for its vast user base exceeding 3 billion individuals across more than 180 nations.

This functionality enables users to long-press a message and select ‘Translate’ to instantly convert it into their chosen language. It is applicable in one-on-one discussions, group chats, and Channel updates. Additionally, users can save preferred languages for future translations.

Beyond manual translations, Android users will have the option to activate automatic translation for an entire chat thread, ensuring that all incoming messages are translated by default. This feature is designed to enhance the smoothness of conversations in multilingual settings.

WhatsApp has confirmed that translations are carried out locally on the user’s device, meaning the company does not have access or visibility into messages during this process. This aligns with WhatsApp’s ongoing commitment to end-to-end encryption and safeguarding user privacy.

The rollout of this feature is gradual, starting with a limited selection of languages. On Android, translations are available in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. For iPhone users, the initial support encompasses over 19 languages.

WhatsApp expressed optimism that this innovative tool will facilitate more meaningful connections between users and their loved ones and communities across various geographical regions, while minimising the challenges of multilingual communication.

The company remarked that they hope this feature aids in dismantling language barriers and enables users to bond more profoundly with friends and families around the world.
