Spotify Takes Steps to Combat AI Misuse in Music

Spotify has introduced a range of new initiatives designed to tackle the misuse of generative AI within its platform. These measures include enhanced impersonation rules, the introduction of a music spam filter, and support for industry-standard AI disclosures.

Understanding AI in the Music Industry

The streaming service highlighted that the swift evolution of AI technology presents both prospects and challenges for the music sector. While some musicians utilise AI tools creatively, others have suffered from having their voices duplicated without permission, or their profiles misused through fraudulent uploads.

Combatting Spam Tracks

Over the last year, Spotify has stated that it has eliminated over 75 million spam tracks. The company plans to keep updating its guidelines in response to ongoing industry challenges.

Strengthened Impersonation Policy

Among the new initiatives is an enhanced impersonation policy. The use of vocal deepfakes or unauthorised utilisation of an artist’s voice will not be allowed unless explicitly permitted by the artist. Furthermore, Spotify is collaborating with distributors to thwart fraudulent uploads to artist profiles and is dedicated to allocating more resources towards resolving content mismatch issues.

Introducing a Music Spam Filter

Spotify is also set to roll out a new music spam filter this autumn. This system will detect accounts that engage in mass uploads, duplicates, overly short tracks, and various spam tactics, consequently reducing their visibility and recommendations on the platform. The primary goal is to safeguard royalties for legitimate artists while preventing spammers from taking advantage of payment systems.

Supporting Industry-Standard AI Disclosures

Additionally, Spotify will begin backing a new industry standard for AI disclosures within music credits, developed via DDEX. This framework will enable artists and rights holders to specify how AI was involved in the creation of a track, including aspects like vocals, instrumentation, or post-production. These disclosures are set to appear on the platform once labels and distributors start submitting the relevant information.

Enhancing Transparency and Trust

Spotify has affirmed that these changes aim to enhance transparency and maintain listener trust, rather than punish artists who use AI responsibly. The company is working with various partners, such as DistroKid, CD Baby, Believe, EMPIRE, and FUGA, to promote widespread adoption of this standard.

Artistic Integrity and Fairness

While recognising that AI is shaping the music creation process, Spotify asserts that its primary focus remains on safeguarding artist identity, ensuring equitable royalties, and providing enhanced transparency for listeners. The company emphasises that it does not create or own music, treating all tracks equally, regardless of the production methods employed.
