Snapchat Memories Storage Plans Update

Snapchat Memories is adjusting its functionality by introducing limits to what was previously an unlimited feature. Since its debut in 2016, Memories has expanded into a comprehensive archive, now containing over a trillion saved Snaps globally. Moving forward, users will face a limitation of 5GB of free storage, while additional space can be acquired through paid plans.

New Memories Storage Plans

To address the increased demand for storage, Snap has rolled out new Memories Storage Plans. The basic plan offers 100GB for $1.99 each month. Current Snapchat+ members, who are subscribed at a cost of $3.99 per month, will automatically see their storage limit raised to 250GB. For those requiring even more space, Snap has introduced a Platinum tier that provides an impressive 5TB of storage for $15.99 monthly.

Impact on Users

The company has indicated that the majority of users will likely remain unaffected by these changes, as most are comfortably below the 5GB limit. However, for individuals who have already exceeded this cap, Snap is offering a one-year grace period that includes temporary storage before they need to select a plan.

Broader Revenue Diversification

This change is part of Snap’s larger initiative to broaden its revenue streams beyond advertising. Last month, the company unveiled Lens+, a subscription service priced at $9 that provides exclusive augmented reality effects. By monetising storage, Snapchat aligns itself alongside prominent tech companies like Google and Apple, who also impose fees for cloud storage solutions.

For casual users, this update may not create significant challenges. However, for those who depend on Snapchat as a long-term repository for their photos, the decision will be whether to delete some saved content or to invest in a paid plan to maintain their complete collection of memories.
