Sora – OpenAI’s AI-driven Social App for Video Creation
OpenAI has unveiled Sora, an innovative social application that brings AI-powered video creation to users, marking the company’s entry into the realm of short-form videos. This app, currently available exclusively through invite for iPhone users in the US and Canada, merges generative AI with a TikTok-like feed, enabling users to create, share, and remix video clips.
A Social App Built on AI
Unlike conventional video platforms, Sora focuses on AI-generated content. Central to the app is a feature known as “cameos,” enabling users to upload a one-time video and audio recording of themselves. This verified representation can then be utilised for creating short clips, whether by the user or by friends, who have full authority over access and deletion. OpenAI claims that this co-ownership model ensures users maintain control over how their likeness is utilised.
Interactive Features and Limitations
The app also offers a “Remix” function, motivating users to engage with existing clips and trending content. At this stage, generated videos are constrained to 10 seconds. The recommendations are based on activity history, geographical location, engagement levels, and optionally, discussions held with ChatGPT. To tackle concerns around screen time and content safety, parental controls have been implemented, permitting restrictions on scrolling and personalisation.
Safeguards and Restrictions
OpenAI has established guidelines to mitigate risks of misuse. Public figures cannot be featured in Sora videos unless they themselves upload a cameo, and explicit or extreme content is not permitted by default. Users retain the authority to revoke permissions at any time; however, concerns persist regarding the possibility of non-consensual or misleading AI-generated material.
Accessibility and Monetisation
Sora is debuting as a free application, with anticipated monetisation options for additional video generations during peak periods. Users who get early access will also have the ability to share up to four invitations with their friends, although an Android version has yet to be confirmed.
Powered by Sora 2
Behind the scenes is Sora 2, OpenAI’s cutting-edge video model. This enhanced system offers improved physical realism and storytelling capabilities across various shots, featuring more natural movements and better audio-video synchronisation. ChatGPT Pro subscribers can directly access Sora 2 without needing to wait for an invitation.
Looking Ahead
OpenAI has suggested future expansions, including a Pro version, web-based access, and a developer API on the horizon. Employees involved in the app’s internal pilot programme have portrayed Sora as having the potential to become a game-changer for video, thus indicating that the app could revolutionise short-form content creation.
