Google’s Investment in India’s Data Centre Cluster
Google is making significant strides in India with a $10 billion investment dedicated to creating a new data centre cluster in the Visakhapatnam area. This ambitious initiative will feature three campuses located in nearby villages, including Adavivaram, Tarluvada, and Rambilli, boasting a total power capacity of 1 gigawatt.
Infrastructure Developments
Key infrastructure developments for this project entail the installation of three submarine cables, the construction of cable landing stations, and the implementation of high-capacity fibre and telecom networks. Google intends to have these centres fully operational by July 2028.
Formalising the Deal
The agreement is expected to be finalised when senior Google officials engage with Andhra Pradesh’s IT and Electronics Minister, Nara Lokesh, in New Delhi on October 14. This investment is anticipated to be the largest direct contribution by Google to India’s digital infrastructure.
Previous Agreements and Legislative Changes
In December 2024, Google had previously entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Andhra Pradesh government, following a shift in state leadership. Furthermore, the state government is actively working to modify laws and regulations surrounding data to facilitate the progression of such expansive digital projects.
AI Infrastructure Hub
The data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam will contribute to India’s inaugural AI Infrastructure Hub, designed to centralise advanced digital infrastructure. This initiative aims to stimulate research advancements, enhance AI capabilities, and foster the growth of related technologies both in Andhra Pradesh and throughout India.
Google’s Global Presence
Currently, Google operates data centres in 11 other countries but has yet to establish a cluster of this magnitude in India.
