Agentic Payments: Redefining Digital Transactions

Agentic Payments is a groundbreaking collaboration between Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI, designed to facilitate digital transactions directly through conversational interfaces like ChatGPT. Currently in its pilot phase, this initiative allows users to discover, shop, and pay for products seamlessly within a single chat platform.

The partnership leverages Razorpay’s robust payment infrastructure, NPCI’s UPI network—which processes approximately 20 billion transactions each month—and OpenAI’s advanced conversational tools, ensuring that users can make in-chat payments without navigating away from the conversation.

The Mechanics of Agentic Payments

Agentic Payments operates through Razorpay’s financial partners, including Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, utilising new UPI features like UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay to guarantee secure and instantaneous transactions. The initial pilot is integrated with BigBasket, which allows users to conveniently place grocery orders through ChatGPT.

How It Works for Users

Users can effortlessly request ingredients for their recipes, browse selections from BigBasket, confirm their choices, and complete payments via UPI, all within the chat interface. Additionally, users gain the ability to monitor and manage their transactions in real-time.

The collaboration among these three entities also aims to investigate further applications, including personalised checkout processes and user-initiated automated payments, paving the way for a new era in digital transactions.
