Pixel 10 Pro Fold: Google’s Latest Foldable Innovation
Pixel 10 Pro Fold represents a significant advancement in foldables, showcasing what a foldable device should embody. With a price tag of ₹1,72,999, it firmly resides in the luxury segment, marking Google’s most advanced entry into this category thus far. After two prior attempts that received mixed reviews, this version features a more robust hinge, enhanced display brightness, and improved battery longevity. While it may not introduce groundbreaking elements, it confidently establishes its own identity, which is a crucial step in its evolution.
Design: Built for Longevity
At first glance, distinguishing the Pixel 10 Pro Fold from its predecessor may prove challenging. It retains the flat edges, broad frame, and familiar rear camera enclosure. However, upon closer inspection, the enhancements start to emerge. The new hinge mechanism is a highlight: it operates smoothly, quietly, and is resistant to dust and moisture due to a genuine IP68 rating. This is a landmark feature for foldables, providing the Pixel with a much-appreciated level of durability.
Weighing in at 258g, it is notably heavy, and that weight can become evident over extended use. The matte finish on the back panel exudes elegance, although it does attract smudges more rapidly than one might wish. The newly introduced Moonstone hue conceals them reasonably effectively, and the entire framework feels considerably more premium and well-constructed compared to previous models. Google may not have reinvented the design, but the engineering has certainly been enhanced.
Displays: Enhanced Brightness and Balance
A foldable’s success heavily relies on its display quality, and Google’s latest offerings excel where it truly matters. The 6.4-inch front display now offers improved usability thanks to a slightly broader profile, facilitating a less cramped typing experience. The internal 8-inch LTPO OLED display reaches a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, providing stunning visuals with exceptional brightness, even in direct sunlight.
The bezels are thicker than those found on Samsung or Vivo counterparts, and yes, the crease remains visible if one chooses to seek it out, yet it is typically easy to overlook during daily interactions. Both screens deliver vibrant contrast, accurate colour representation, and seamless touch responsiveness. This time, Google’s calibration feels consistent across both displays, making the Fold more user-friendly on a day-to-day basis.
Software: Progressing Yet Still Catching Up
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold operates on Android 16, utilising the latest Pixel UI, which brings the dynamic aesthetics of Material You to the larger screen format. It is vibrant, colourful, and highly responsive. The drawback, however, is that Google has yet to perfect multitasking on a foldable device. The split-screen mode is the only viable option, while competitors such as Samsung and Vivo offer floating windows and additional app configurations.
AI functionality remains a key strength for Google. The new Magic Cue feature attempts to predict user needs, readily providing data from Gmail, Calendar, or Keep, although it proves inconsistent and is currently limited to Google’s own applications. In contrast, Camera Coach offers genuinely valuable assistance, delivering real-time advice to help users capture better images. It represents a form of intelligent assistance that feels sincerely useful.
Performance: The Tensor G5 Shows Composure
This year’s Fold is powered by the Tensor G5 chip designed by TSMC, combined with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Although synthetic benchmarks may not yield impressive results, real-world usage reveals a different narrative. The device maintains a cool temperature under strain, and gaming performance is remarkably stable, with Call of Duty: Mobile operating seamlessly even at elevated graphics settings.
While it may not match the performance levels of Snapdragon-powered flagship devices, Google’s chip proves to be well-tailored for its software. The Fold navigates multitasking and photo processing effortlessly, with significantly improved heat management compared to earlier Tensor versions.
Cameras: Still Lagging Behind
A weaker aspect of the device lies in its camera system. Despite the “Pro” designation, the hardware remains unchanged: featuring a 48MP primary lens, a 10.8MP telephoto lens (5x), and a 10.5MP ultrawide lens. The image quality is acceptable, but it does not align with flagship standards. The primary camera produces good colour and contrast but lacks sharpness and detail, particularly in zoomed images. The telephoto lens performs consistently, yielding solid results even in low-light conditions, whilst the ultrawide lens lacks distinction.
Video recording capabilities continue to fall short compared to competitors. Even 4K video appears softer than desired, and low-light recordings can be noisy, despite Google’s processing efforts. The brand’s computational photography still achieves remarkable results, but the Fold’s hardware requires significant upgrades to justify its premium pricing.
Battery and Charging: A Quiet Success
Google has finally addressed user concerns regarding battery life. The 5,015mAh battery comfortably endures an entire day of intensive usage or stretches beyond a day with lesser activity. This marks a significant enhancement from prior models. While wired charging is still limited to 30W and wireless to 15W, the new Pixel Snap system, Google’s iteration of magnetic wireless charging, integrates flawlessly with Qi2 and MagSafe accessories.
Verdict: Maturing Foldable from Google
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold reflects what Google should have launched a year ago. It stands out as a refined, durable, and finally reliable device. The exceptional hinge, bright and balanced displays, along with improved battery life, contribute positively. However, the camera system still underperforms considering the cost, and the foldable software continues to lag behind competitors like Samsung and Vivo.
For those who favour a streamlined software experience, prompt updates, and thoughtful innovation over raw specifications, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold emerges as a strong contender.
