Nothing OS 4.0: Enhanced Features and AI Tools
Nothing has initiated the public rollout of Nothing OS 4.0, its software update based on Android 16. This upgrade delivers a more polished interface, improved system coherence, and the introduction of AI-powered creative tools through the new Essential Apps framework.
Interface Upgrades and Aesthetic Consistency
This update retains Nothing’s distinctive visual style while enhancing design, interactivity, and device intelligence.
Live Updates through the Glyph Interface
A standout feature is the implementation of Live Updates via the Glyph Interface. Users can now receive real-time information regarding rides, deliveries, and timers on the screen and Glyph lights, ensuring seamless tracking of progress without needing to access an app. Any application compatible with Android 16’s Live Updates will automatically function with Glyph Progress, greatly expanding its compatibility.
Enhanced Dark Mode and App Support
Nothing OS 4.0 introduces a more profound Extra Dark Mode, which boosts contrast and decreases power consumption across the system. This feature now applies to first-party applications, such as Essential Space and Launcher, with plans for wider app support in the future.
Revamped Animations and Touch Responses
The update includes significant reworks of animations throughout the operating system. Touch responses, swipes, and gestures now have increased depth, while opening and closing apps features subtle background scaling to evoke a sense of movement and connection. Volume controls have also been enhanced with gentle haptic feedback at both the upper and lower limits.
Expanded Widget Sizes and Functionality
Additional widget dimensions have been introduced, featuring new 1×1 and 2×1 layouts for Weather, Pedometer, and Screen Time. A new Pop-up View allows users to operate two floating applications simultaneously and switch between them effortlessly. Hidden Icons enable a decluttered home screen by allowing users to conceal apps in the App Drawer while preserving quick access.
Exclusive Features for Phone (3) Users
Owners of the Phone (3) will benefit from exclusive enhancements, including improved Flip to Glyph options, refined Pocket Mode, and new Glyph Toys such as Hourglass and Lunar Cycle. Additionally, a Glyph Mirror Selfie upgrade enables the saving of both mirrored and original photo versions.
Future Rollout and Playground Expansion
The rollout of Nothing OS 4.0 is commencing with Phone (3) users, with plans to extend to other Nothing and CMF devices shortly.
Alongside the operating system update, the company is also expanding Nothing Playground. Users can now describe their ideas in the Widget Builder, allowing AI to generate a custom Essential App. These creations will be housed in the new Widget Drawer, introduced with OS 4.0, consolidating both built and collected tools in a single organised space.
