AI Technology and Refund Claims on Swiggy Instamart
An X user has posted a claim regarding a Swiggy Instamart customer who allegedly misused AI technology to falsely request a refund for broken eggs. According to the post by user Kapilansh, the customer received a tray containing just one cracked egg but opted to distort the evidence.
Manipulating Evidence with AI
Instead of simply reporting the problem, the customer reportedly employed Gemini Nano, a widely-used AI tool, to enhance the image. By inputting the command to “apply more cracks,” the AI modified the original image, creating one that displayed over 20 cracked eggs. The edited image was reportedly so lifelike that it was deemed impossible to differentiate from a real photograph.
Submission of Altered Evidence
The manipulated image was alleged to have been submitted to Instamart support as proof of the damage. Kapilansh noted that support quickly processed a full refund after reviewing the “evidence” and moved on without further investigation.
Someone ordered eggs on Instamart and found that only one was cracked. Rather than simply reporting it, they accessed Gemini Nano and typed “apply more cracks.” In seconds, AI transformed that tray into one with over 20 cracked eggs—remarkably flawless and indistinguishable from a real image, leading to a prompt refund.
Challenges for Verification Systems
Kapilansh highlighted a critical issue, indicating that verification and refund processes, established when photos were inherently reliable, now struggle with advancements in AI technology. The user remarked that if just 1% of customers exploit AI for dishonest claims, it could severely impact the economics of quick-commerce services.
The Limitations of Current Systems
However, the user refrained from implicating AI as the main issue. Kapilansh stated that AI should not be viewed as the antagonist; rather, the underlying problem lies within outdated verification systems. This situation underscores the urgent requirement for enhanced mechanisms to validate digital claims in an era dominated by AI advancements, referring to this time as “the era of AI vs AI.”
As of now, Swiggy Instamart has not provided any comments regarding the specific allegations mentioned in the post.
