OpenAI Denies Rumours of Ads on ChatGPT

OpenAI has recently faced speculation about potential advertising on ChatGPT. Over the past few weeks, users have circulated screenshots suggesting the presence of ads in the application, leading to dissatisfaction among many. However, the head of ChatGPT, Nick Turley, has refuted these claims, indicating that the images are either fabricated or unfounded. He also clarified that there are no active trials for advertisements.

Clarification from OpenAI’s Leadership

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and head of the ChatGPT app, addressed the situation on the microblogging site X (formerly Twitter). He stated that there is considerable confusion regarding the ad-related rumours. He confirmed, “There are no live tests for ads – any screenshots you’ve seen are either not real or not ads.” Despite this, some users continue to share images of ChatGPT that appear to showcase app recommendations, leading them to speculate that OpenAI might be investigating ads for a future implementation.

Future Considerations for Advertising

Turley also noted that should OpenAI ever consider integrating advertisements into ChatGPT, it would adopt a careful strategy prioritising user satisfaction and ensuring transparency in their decision-making process. Although earlier reports hinted that OpenAI had contemplated introducing ads, developer Tibor Blaho mentioned discovering code related to “an ad feature” within the Android app of ChatGPT.

Control Over Suggestions

Additionally, Mark Chen, OpenAI’s chief research officer, confirmed that the app suggestions feature within ChatGPT has been disabled. He mentioned that the organisation is exploring methods to give users greater authority regarding such suggestions.

Response to Competitive Developments

Following the introduction of Google’s Gemini 3 model, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly initiated a “Code Red” alert. Employees were informed to postpone the deployment of new features and services to concentrate on enhancing the ChatGPT experience.
