Gmail Address Changes: New Feature Announcement

Google is reportedly in the process of testing a highly anticipated feature that will enable users to alter their Gmail addresses. This functionality will help users maintain their existing accounts and data while updating their email addresses, alleviating the need to establish a new Gmail account. Google has verified this feature within its Hindi-language support resources, empowering users to change their Gmail addresses without losing any existing emails, contacts, files, or account information.

Gmail Address Changes Are Coming

According to a report from 9To5Google, Google will soon permit users to select a new Gmail address linked with their current account. Google stated that users can change their Google Account email address ending in gmail.com to a new address that also ends in gmail.com. However, this exciting feature will be rolled out gradually in 2026, so it may take some time before everyone can access it. The tech giant has also pointed out that the previous Gmail address will still be operational, although it will no longer serve as the primary address. Users can continue to receive emails at their old addresses and use them for logging in.

Limitations on Gmail Address Changes

Despite the advantages, the Gmail address change feature will come with certain constraints. Google will restrict users to changing their Gmail address once every 12 months, allowing for a maximum of three address changes throughout the lifespan of the account. This limitation is designed to prevent misuse and minimise confusion across various Google services such as Drive, YouTube, Payments, and Workspace.

As of this moment, the feature is not yet live and remains in development. There are expectations for Google to provide further details regarding this significant update, considering that it has only been announced in Hindi so far. It remains uncertain whether the company will implement a global rollout or conduct testing with a limited group of users.
