Gemini 3 vs ChatGPT: The Changing AI Landscape

Gemini 3 has emerged as a powerful player in the AI market, leading OpenAI’s ChatGPT to face significant challenges in maintaining its position. With plans to compete aggressively against Google, ChatGPT has seen a considerable drop in web traffic, losing over 22% in the past six weeks, according to Similarweb data. The average number of visitors to ChatGPT has decreased from 203 million in early January to 158 million per week.

Stable Traffic for Google’s Gemini

In contrast, Google’s Gemini has shown impressive stability, attracting approximately 55–60 million daily visits. Reports indicate that the traffic to Gemini has increased by 40% compared to the size of ChatGPT’s audience. Interestingly, Gemini has not only more users but also a more engaged demographic. Users on Gemini spend an average of 7 minutes and 20 seconds per visit, while ChatGPT users spend an average of 6 minutes and 32 seconds. This trend highlights a significant transformation in the AI sector as competition continues to alter user preferences.

Reasons for ChatGPT’s Decline

A report from Economic Times identifies two potential factors contributing to the decline in ChatGPT’s traffic. One possibility is the seasonal drop typically seen during holidays; the other seems to be the increasing popularity of Gemini, particularly with its new AI model that has outperformed many competing technologies. Further, Similarweb shared insights on additional AI platforms during December: Perplexity.ai received 154.9 million visits, Grok had 247 million visits, and the Chinese AI tool DeepSeek amassed 282 million visits.

The Evolving AI Market

This scenario clearly illustrates a major evolution in the AI marketplace, indicating how competition is reshaping user behaviours, with the once prevalent “first-mover advantage” gradually losing its significance.
