AI Impact Summit Faces Controversy Over Alleged Theft

AI enthusiasts and industry leaders gathered at a major technology event in India, only for it to be marred by controversy. A startup founder from Bengaluru claimed that his product was stolen from the exhibition area during security measures taken ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

Incident Reported by Startup Founder

Dhananjay Yadav, the co-founder and CEO of NeoSapien, reported that the incident took place on the inaugural day of the India AI Impact Summit, held at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi. His company specializes in a wearable AI device designed to track conversations and analyse emotions.

Frustration on Opening Day

Yadav expressed his disappointment about the opening day on social media, stating that it was a frustrating experience. He had attended the event to back the ecosystem and the government’s initiative for AI adoption. He mentioned that he was excited to be present and support the developments.

Security Procedures Draw Criticism

Yadav detailed how security personnel began their procedures hours before the Prime Minister’s scheduled visit. At noon, these personnel arrived to secure the area, preparing for PM Modi’s appearance at 2 pm. He inquired if he should take his wearable devices with him but was assured that they would remain safe, as others were leaving their laptops behind. Trusting the security measures, he left, hoping his products would attract the Prime Minister’s attention.

Disappointment Followed

Upon returning, Yadav found the boxes at his booth completely empty. He lamented the considerable resources spent on flights, accommodation, logistics, and the booth itself only to discover his wearables missing from a high-security location.

Strong Online Reactions

The allegations quickly elicited strong reactions on social media, with many attendees and observers questioning the event’s organisation. One user pointed out the lack of communication from the summit organisers and the Delhi Police regarding the incident. Another comment highlighted the apparent disarray of the summit’s opening day, stating that it resembled a failure to properly manage the event, instead of serving as a platform for learning and showcasing innovations.

Comparisons with International Standards

Several attendees compared the organisation of the Indian event unfavourably with similar gatherings in cities like Singapore and Dubai. Many noted that the trade fair infrastructure in India requires substantial improvements and greater discipline from both exhibitors and visitors. A user remarked on the differences in practices at international expos, citing that booths are rigorously managed in other countries.

Concerns about Indian Expo Management

Another commenter pointed out the sad reality of following regulations in India only to be exploited by those who do not adhere to them. They expressed their displeasure that such incidents occurred at an event intended to showcase India’s advancements to a global audience.

Event Highlights Overshadowed

The AI Impact Summit, which began on February 16, is among India’s leading technology events this year, attracting notable figures such as Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
