Rangrez Restaurant Closure in Hammersmith
Rangrez, known for its Indian cuisine in London, is set to cease operations next month after serving the community for over 16 years. Owner Harman Singh Kapoor shared the news on social media, explaining that various challenges such as increasing operational expenses, safety issues, harassment, and ongoing disturbances led to this tough decision.
Challenges Leading to Closure
Kapoor announced, “After 16 unforgettable years, the decision to close Rangrez restaurant in Hammersmith has finally come.” He elaborated that “Rising costs, continual online harassment, frequent disturbances and aggression from individuals, combined with insufficient support from the Met Police, have created an untenable situation.”
Transitioning Focus
In addition to closing the restaurant, Kapoor expressed gratitude to loyal customers for their support throughout the years. He mentioned a desire to pivot towards activism, asserting that “Radicals should take note: while my business may be disrupted, my determination remains intact. I will now confront this challenge with renewed strength and purpose.”
Background of Harassment and Threats
The decision to shut down follows a history of tension and alleged threats. Kapoor previously accused individuals of targeting the restaurant after he shared videos critiquing the Khalistan movement. In 2023, he stated that his establishment faced an attack shortly after an incident of vandalism at the Indian High Commission in London.
At that time, Kapoor disclosed that his family received numerous threats, abusive communications, and online harassment, expressing concern over the authorities’ reactions. UK police eventually reported that officers had spoken with Kapoor, reviewed video evidence, and provided safety recommendations. However, Kapoor insisted that no one had been caught for these troubling incidents, leaving him with ongoing safety concerns.
Continued Harassment as a Business Factor
He asserted that the business has dealt with persistent disruptions and harassment throughout the years, which factored significantly into the challenging decision to close operations.
