Anthropic Institute: Pioneering Research in AI Impact

Anthropic Institute debuted on March 11, focusing on the research and discussion of the societal, economic, and legal implications of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This initiative coincides with the startup’s anticipation of significant advancements in AI over the next two years.

Expansion in Public Policy

Along with the establishment of the research institute, Anthropic is enhancing its public policy efforts.

Fast-Paced AI Development

Anthropic’s blog highlighted the rapid advancements in technology. The article mentioned that the pace of AI progress has been exceptionally swift and projected that even more substantial advancements are expected in the next two years.

Research Focus of Anthropic Institute

The Anthropic Institute is committed to investigating the impacts and challenges posed by advanced AI systems across various domains, including employment, economic conditions, and global risks. Additionally, the institute will delve into topics such as AI ethics, governance, and the implications of self-improving AI systems.

Leadership and Team Composition

Jack Clark, a co-founder of Anthropic, is set to lead the Anthropic Institute while also assuming the role of Head of Public Benefit for the company. The research team will comprise machine learning engineers, economists, and social scientists, amalgamating three current research groups: Frontier Red Team, Societal Impacts, and Economic Research.

New Appointments

Anthropic has recently welcomed notable researchers such as Matt Botvinick, who will spearhead initiatives related to AI and legal systems. Additionally, economist Anton Korinek will focus on the ways in which transformative AI could alter economic activities, while Zoë Hitzig will aim to connect economic insights with the training and development of AI models.

Key Objectives of Anthropic Institute

This newly formed team will harness Anthropic’s existing efforts, insights, and data to identify potential threats and opportunities arising from AI. They intend to share findings from their development of cutting-edge AI technologies with the public and stakeholders.

Collaboration with Affected Communities

The institute will work alongside various workers, industries, and communities impacted by AI advancements. The insights gathered will be disseminated to both researchers and the broader public as society transitions towards advanced AI. This outreach aims to prepare communities for the rapid changes associated with transformative AI and address related risks.

Anthropic’s Enhanced Public Policy Initiatives

Anthropic announced the growth of its public policy team and the launch of its first office in Washington DC this spring.

Appointment of Sarah Heck

Sarah Heck has been appointed as the new Head of Public Policy. She previously served as Head of External Affairs and led global entrepreneurship and public diplomacy policy at the White House National Security Council.

Plans for Further Talent Acquisition

Moreover, the company aims to recruit additional talent for analytical and research positions to bolster its public policy efforts.
