Bharat Taxi: India’s Innovative Cooperative Ride-Hailing Platform

Bharat Taxi has positioned itself as India’s first cooperative ride-hailing platform, offering cab, auto, and bike services. With total downloads exceeding 2.73 million, early adoption data from Sensor Tower indicates growing interest. Of these downloads, around 84.2% (approximately 2.30 million) were from the Google Play Store (Android), while the remaining 15.8% (433K) came from the App Store (iOS). Post-launch, there was a sharp decline in installs, which then stabilised from late February through March.

Launch and Objectives of Bharat Taxi

Launched by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on February 5, 2026, Bharat Taxi aims to challenge private companies such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido. This platform operates on a driver-ownership model, ensuring that each driver holds five shares and that no commission is deducted per ride. Reports indicate that drivers benefit from a guaranteed minimum base rate per kilometer and the promise of retaining 80% of the profits.

Initial Reception and User Statistics

The launch event featured an awareness rally for drivers, referred to as “Sarathis,” with an anticipated registration of around 2.5 lakh vehicles. Currently, Bharat Taxi operates in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, Ghaziabad (Delhi-NCR), as well as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Somnath, and Dwarka (Gujarat).

In a recent address in the Lok Sabha, Amit Shah revealed that as of March 1, Bharat Taxi has amassed 21.34 lakh (2.13 million) registered users and 2.31 lakh (0.23 million) registered drivers. The platform’s promising initial traction illustrates its ability to maintain user engagement beyond its launch period, indicative of a stable demand. Nevertheless, its long-term success will hinge on the expansion of its driver network and its ability to compete with established players in the ride-hailing sector.

Challenges and User Feedback

Users have expressed concerns regarding higher fares on Bharat Taxi in comparison to Uber, Ola, and Rapido. In evaluations of rides from Sector 39, Gurugram, to Qutub Minar and Old Delhi Railway Station, fares were found to be 20–30% higher than those of competitors. Although Bharat Taxi promotes stable, no-surge pricing, the service appears more expensive overall.

The Evolving Indian Ride-Hailing Market

The ride-hailing market in India has experienced significant shifts in the past two years, primarily with Rapido emerging as a leader in ride volume, followed by Uber, while Ola’s market share has declined and it now stands third.

While initial figures are anticipated considering the excitement and promises surrounding the platform, questions linger about whether drivers will fully embrace it. Additionally, how Bharat Taxi addresses any negative user experiences will be a crucial test for the service. The elevated pricing remains perplexing, as competitive pricing could lead to higher earnings for drivers. It may take some time for a final assessment to be made, but a significant failure in this venture could indicate potential mismanagement within the government sector, despite high consumer expectations.
