Chrome Updates: Vertical Tabs and Immersive Reading Mode

Chrome is introducing exciting new features for its desktop version, including vertical tabs and immersive reading mode. For years, users have been accustomed to the traditional horizontal tab layout, where tabs reduce in size as more are added, often making it difficult to see the full titles. The new vertical tabs feature addresses this by shifting tabs from the top to a side panel. This article covers all essential information regarding the Chrome updates.

How do Vertical Tabs in Google Chrome Operate?

With the transition to vertical tabs in the side panel, users can now view complete page titles “even when the number of tabs exceeds ten.” Managing Tab Groups has also become more straightforward. To activate the vertical tabs, users need to right-click on any Chrome window and choose “Show Tabs Vertically.” This function makes it “easier to view page titles and organise tab groups,” as stated in a post by Google on X.

Too Many Tabs Open in Google Chrome?

If users find themselves overwhelmed with open tabs, the vertical tabs feature is now available. By simply right-clicking on any Chrome window and selecting “Show Tabs Vertically,” users can move their tabs to the side of the browser, facilitating easier reading of page titles and management of tab groups.

Total Familiarity with Favicons

In Google Chrome, users also have the option to minimise the vertical tabs panel, displaying only favicons rather than full tab titles. This enhancement helps conserve screen space while allowing users to seamlessly identify and switch between their tabs.

Understanding Immersive Reading Mode

Immersive reading mode transforms the web page into a full-screen display that highlights the text. This feature is designed to eliminate distractions, such as ads and sidebars, to provide a clearer reading experience. To enable this mode, users simply right-click on any page and select “Reading Mode” from the address bar. Additionally, it allows users to initiate text-to-speech and tailor their page display.

The Future of Reading in Chrome

This overhaul, featuring vertical tabs and immersive reading mode, is now being rolled out to desktop Chrome users worldwide. If users cannot see the new feature yet, they can manually check for updates in Google Chrome.
