How Do WhatsApp Usernames Work?

The report states that WhatsApp has commenced the username feature rollout for a select number of users on Android and iOS devices, enabling individuals to establish unique usernames for their accounts. To create a WhatsApp username, users will need to navigate to the app’s profile settings. Once the feature is available, a specific option for usernames will be accessible.

Afterward, the application will guide users through a straightforward process to create their unique username. However, there are specific criteria that must be met to achieve a desired username.

Username Character Requirements

WhatsApp has reportedly established particular guidelines for selecting a username. Firstly, WhatsApp usernames should begin with “www.” and must not end with a domain suffix, such as .com or .net.

Additionally, a username must include at least one letter, meaning users cannot solely choose numbers or symbols. Permissible characters include lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), periods, and underscores. Moreover, usernames should range from 3 to 35 characters in length.

A WhatsApp username must be unique across all Meta platforms (like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp). Users cannot adopt usernames already in use on Instagram or Facebook unless they can verify ownership of that username on those platforms.

Furthermore, users need to validate ownership by linking their accounts through Accounts Centre to utilise the same username. Upon confirmation of ownership, they can proceed to use the same username on WhatsApp. However, if another individual already possesses that username on Facebook or Instagram, it cannot be registered on WhatsApp, even if it appears to be available.
