Codex Update: Enhancing AI Coding Assistance
Codex has been significantly updated by OpenAI to better serve as an AI coding assistant for developers. This update extends beyond merely generating code, aiming to make Codex a more dependable collaborator. This progression occurs amidst rising competition in AI coding tools, with competitors like Anthropic releasing products such as Claude Code.
New Features in Codex
One of the standout features of this update is Codex’s ability to utilise a computer in the background. The AI now interacts with your screen by viewing, clicking, and typing, enabling it to operate across various applications autonomously. This capability supports activities such as testing applications, modifying frontend designs, and interfacing with tools that lack APIs. Furthermore, several AI agents can function simultaneously without interrupting ongoing tasks. OpenAI mentioned that multiple agents can collaborate on a Mac concurrently, without disrupting the work being performed in other applications. This is advantageous for developers when iterating on frontend changes, testing applications, or interacting with tools that do not offer an API.
Enhanced Functionality and Integration
The newly developed desktop application now features a built-in browser, enabling users to comment directly on webpages to assist the AI in understanding context better. Moreover, Codex has the ability to create and modify images using the GPT-image-1.5 model. OpenAI has also introduced over 90 new plugins that merge various skills, application integrations, and MCP servers, offering Codex improved methods to gather context and take action across different tools.
Memory and Automation Features
Additional significant enhancements encompass memory and automation capabilities. Codex can now recall user preferences and previous work details to improve future tasks. It also allows for task scheduling for later execution and the ability to automatically resume lengthy tasks over extended durations.
Rolling Out Updates
These new features are currently being deployed for users of the Codex desktop application who are signed in with ChatGPT. Personalisation options, including context-aware suggestions and memory retention, will soon be accessible to Enterprise, Edu, and users situated in the EU and UK. Initially, the computer utilisation feature is exclusive to macOS, with intentions to expand availability to EU and UK users in the near future.
