Google’s AI Chip Strategy and Partnerships in Semiconductor Development

Google’s AI chip strategy is gaining momentum as it collaborates with semiconductor firm Marvell Technology to create advanced chips that enhance the efficiency of artificial intelligence (AI) model execution. The tech giant from Mountain View is extending its AI hardware ecosystem swiftly through substantial investment in custom silicon and key partnerships with top industry firms.

Understanding Google’s AI Chip Strategy

The foundation of Google’s approach to AI chips centres around its custom-developed Tensor Processing Unit (TPU). This chip is tailored specifically to enhance AI systems. By crafting these chips internally, Google can optimise their performance to integrate flawlessly with its software offerings and services. Additionally, partnerships enable Google to ramp up the production and distribution of TPUs, catering to increasing AI processing demands while minimising reliance on third-party suppliers.

As Google improves its capability to manage extensive AI operations across its cloud and consumer services, this advancement poses a challenge to Nvidia’s stronghold in the semiconductor industry. Here is a snapshot of the vital AI chip collaborations Google has established recently.

Meta’s Support for Google

In February 2026, Meta Platforms, the social media behemoth, entered into a multibillion-dollar agreement with Google to access TPU-enhanced AI infrastructure. However, this arrangement serves as a commercial supply contract rather than a joint chip development effort. The partnership allows Meta to utilise Google’s TPU capacity to manage its own AI workloads effectively.

This agreement is expected to enable Google to generate revenue through its chip infrastructure while enhancing the market credibility of its TPUs as a competitive option to Nvidia’s offerings.

The Role of MediaTek in Google’s Strategy

Around March 2026, reports emerged of an impending alliance between Google and MediaTek to collaboratively design a next-generation TPU-class AI chip aimed at data centres. Mass production is projected for this year, with TSMC anticipated to handle the fabrication.

While the specifics of this collaboration remain unconfirmed publicly, Google is still engaged in AI chip ventures with Broadcom. This strategy may bolster Google’s efforts to lessen its dependency on Nvidia.

Details of the Broadcom TPU Deal

Despite its covert dealings with MediaTek, Google has reasserted its long-term partnership with Broadcom to create and supply bespoke AI chips, including future iterations of TPUs and next-gen AI racks extending through 2031.

This agreement enhances Google’s capability to perform extensive AI computations, particularly with models like Gemini. It is forecasted to become active in 2027. Broadcom will oversee comprehensive ASIC development for Google’s TPUs, encompassing power management and advanced packaging, while Google maintains control over the primary architecture.

Broadcom will also supply networking components and other elements used in next-generation AI racks, ensuring a cohesive and integrated silicon and networking framework for large-scale AI training.

Intel’s Contribution to Google’s AI Infrastructure

Google is further broadening its enduring partnership with Intel regarding AI infrastructure. Under the renewed collaboration, Google Cloud will utilise Intel’s AI technology to develop processors and roll out AI-optimised Xeon 6 series CPUs and Infrastructure Processing Units (IPUs) across its data centres.

Intel has indicated that this partnership will cover multiple generations of Xeon processors, aiming to boost performance, energy efficiency, and overall ownership costs throughout Google’s international network.

The companies will collaboratively develop specialised ASIC-based IPUs to alleviate the workload of networking, storage, and security functionalities from primary CPUs.

Marvell’s AI Chip Initiative

Reports indicate that Google is teaming up with Marvell to design two new AI chips. One will function as a memory processing unit meant to complement Google’s TPUs, while the other will be a new TPU expressly designed for AI model execution.

These chips are anticipated to accommodate Google’s escalating workload demands, specifically addressing the rising need for AI inference and training tasks.

Collaborating with Anthropic

Anthropic represents one of Google’s most crucial computing collaborators. The company has secured an agreement with Google Cloud to access multiple gigawatts of TPU capacity to operate its Claude models, fulfilling significant customer demand globally.

This collaboration signifies Anthropic’s second major partnership with Google Cloud, enhancing the TPU capacity previously established last October. For Google, this deal presents a substantial, consistent customer base, a fresh revenue opportunity, and further rationale to scale its AI infrastructure encompassing data centres, chips, and system optimisation.

These alliances not only amplify Google’s chip production capabilities but also aid in cost reduction and increased autonomy from external sources. Collectively, they indicate a significant shift from conventional hardware towards integrated AI infrastructure.
