Cloudflare’s Workforce Reduction and AI Integration
On May 7, Cloudflare’s Chief Executive Officer, Matthew Prince, revealed plans to reduce the company’s global workforce by over 1,100 employees as the organisation integrates artificial intelligence into its operations. Matthew circulated a detailed email to the global team outlining the layoffs and mentioned that the company has “fundamentally transformed” in recent months to adopt AI-driven tools and technology.
Matthew pointed out that Cloudflare’s involvement with AI has surged significantly, with numerous departments including HR and finance utilising an AI agent on a daily basis. Here is an excerpt from Matthew’s communication to the employees:
Important Announcement from Cloudflare’s CEO
In the email, Matthew conveyed:
“We are informing you that we’ve decided to reduce Cloudflare’s workforce by over 1,100 employees on a global scale.
The way we operate at Cloudflare has changed fundamentally. We do not solely develop and sell AI tools and platforms; we are also among the most demanding users of our technology. Cloudflare’s deployment of AI has risen by over 600% in the past three months alone. Employees from various departments including engineering, HR, finance, and marketing conduct thousands of AI agent sessions daily to accomplish their tasks. This necessitates that we be deliberate in how we structure our organisation for the AI-driven era to maximise the value we provide to our customers and to fulfil our mission of fostering a better Internet for everyone, everywhere.
Today is challenging. This decision unfortunately necessitates bidding farewell to colleagues who have significantly contributed to our mission and have helped Cloudflare evolve into one of the most successful enterprises globally. It is crucial to reiterate that this choice does not reflect the individual performance or skills of those who are leaving. Instead, we are completely reimagining every internal process, team, and role within the organisation. Today’s actions are not merely about reducing costs or evaluating individual performances; they are aimed at redefining how a premier, high-growth company functions and adds value in the AI-driven era.
This is a moment we, as founders and leaders, must take accountability for. Matthew has personally overseen every offer letter extended to new hires. This practice has always been a source of pride for him, as it symbolises growth and the amazing talent joining our mission. It felt necessary for this message to come from him and the co-founder rather than being conveyed through managers. Therefore, all employees will receive emails directly from both of us.”
Communication and Support for Departing Team Members
Continuing in the email, Matthew mentioned:
“Every member of our global team will receive an email from us within the next hour outlining the implications of this change for them. For those leaving today, we will ensure this update reaches both their personal and Cloudflare email accounts promptly.
It is imperative for us to treat departing team members fairly and in a manner that exceeds industry standards. We believe that acting with empathy does not involve evading difficult choices but represents how one treats individuals during such moments. If we expect our team to perform at a world-class level, we too have an obligation to reciprocate in our treatment of them. We are complementing these tough decisions with severance packages that are industry leaders. Departing employees will receive the equivalent of their complete base salary through the end of 2026. Healthcare benefits vary globally, and those in the United States will continue receiving support until the year’s end. Additionally, equity for departing members will vest through August 15, extending their stock ownership beyond their departure date. If departing team members have not reached their one-year cliffs, we will waive those and grant them pro-rated equity through August as well.
We have asked the team to undertake this difficult action only once. Our intention is to avoid similar situations in the near future. By implementing definitive measures now, we are providing clear guidance to those departing and ensuring stability for the remaining team members. We are taking these actions now because smaller, repeated layoffs or drawn-out reorganisations create prolonged emotional stress for employees and hinder our ability to innovate. This approach reflects the right course of action and aligns with the values of the company we are striving to establish.
Embracing Change for a Better Future
Cloudflare originated as a digitally driven company built in the cloud, enabling it to overtake established companies hampered by outdated systems and processes. Having reached a leadership position, we cannot rely on organisational structures that may have worked in the past. We are confident that our newly structured organisation will be even more agile and innovative as we continue to shape the future.
For those departing, your contributions have laid a strong foundation for Cloudflare’s current success. The organisation holds immense respect and gratitude for the impact of your work. There is confidence that departing team members will secure positions in other reputable companies and continue building exceptional futures, drawing from the unique skills acquired at Cloudflare.
Transparency is a fundamental principle at Cloudflare, and it was essential for team members to receive this information directly from us. We will participate in an earnings conference call at 2 PM PT to provide further insights. Additionally, we intend to address today’s announcements live during our all-hands meeting.
While this is a difficult day, making this decision was necessary. The mission to create a better Internet is more critical now than ever, and there remains much work ahead.
