Anthropic Claude Mythos: India’s Cybersecurity Concerns and Local Hosting Requirements
Amid heightened cybersecurity issues regarding the Claude Mythos AI model from Anthropic, the Indian government is urging the AI firm to host its models within the country. Authorities are worried that AI systems hosted abroad might pose risks to national security, data safety, adherence to local regulations, and legal control over sensitive data.
Government Discussions with Anthropic
As reported by Money Control, the Indian team from Anthropic recently participated in virtual discussions with representatives from the Finance Ministry, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). These talks revolved around access to the Claude Mythos AI model, potential cybersecurity threats, and the measures Anthropic has in place for AI safety and security.
Exploratory interactions
In light of rising concerns about the AI model, a government official indicated that following the exposure of issues regarding Mythos, the discussions held by Anthropic’s team with government stakeholders were primarily exploratory. The aim was to grasp the model’s maturity, assess the severity of the alleged threats, and identify necessary safeguards.
Concerns Over Powerful AI Systems
The dialogues come at a time when there is increasing scrutiny of the AI model, as the government is considering ways to enhance its oversight over significant AI applications used in vital sectors including banking, telecommunications, and other essential infrastructure.
Shifting Focus on Sovereignty
The report conveyed that these cybersecurity concerns have evolved into matters of sovereignty. Sources who wished to remain anonymous stated that the discussions were not centred on developing policies. Initially, the government aimed to evaluate whether the concerns were based on a true technological breakthrough or if they were exaggerated.
Safe Use of Advanced AI Models
One individual highlighted that the application of any advanced AI models in sensitive areas such as government functions or the financial sector should only occur if these systems are hosted within Indian territory or on a secure cloud platform approved by the government.
Telecommunications Sector Impact
The growing apprehensions have also reached the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), as the government has instructed telecom providers to evaluate the risks and determine their preparedness to confront such threats.
