OpenAI Legal Action Against Apple Over ChatGPT Integration
OpenAI is reportedly set to pursue legal measures against Apple regarding the integration of ChatGPT within the iOS platform. This integration was anticipated to boost the number of paid subscribers for ChatGPT and enhance its functionality across various Apple devices, including iPhones and Macs. However, OpenAI has not experienced the growth and visibility it initially hoped for from this collaboration.
Preparation for Legal Action
As per a report from Bloomberg, OpenAI has started to prepare for potential legal action against Apple. The report indicated that OpenAI’s in-house legal team has been consulting with a law firm to explore various legal avenues that could soon be initiated. Before proceeding with any formal legal action, OpenAI may issue a legal notice to Apple, alleging a breach of contract.
Executive Statements
A representative from OpenAI was quoted by Bloomberg stating that they have executed every aspect from a product standpoint, while Apple has not, and that in fact, Apple has not made a genuine effort.
Partnership Announcement
The partnership between Apple and OpenAI was revealed during the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. Through this collaboration, ChatGPT was integrated into Apple’s platforms via Siri and Visual Intelligence on iPhones, allowing users to direct their queries to the AI chatbot.
Expected Benefits and Current Issues
This deal was meant to yield significant benefits for OpenAI in terms of user acquisition and new subscribers, ultimately leading to an expansive user base within one of the world’s most utilised mobile ecosystems. Nevertheless, recent reports indicate that OpenAI feels the ChatGPT integration is not sufficiently visible within Apple’s software, making it challenging for users to discover or effectively use the features. Consequently, this has resulted in much lower revenue than OpenAI initially anticipated.
Concerns from Apple
Conversely, Apple has expressed worries regarding OpenAI’s privacy protocols and standards. Furthermore, it appears that Apple may not take kindly to OpenAI’s venture into hardware products. In a separate initiative, Apple has partnered with Google to develop its next-generation AI model and enhance its artificial intelligence initiatives.
