India currently boasts over 73,000 startups featuring at least one female director, marking a remarkable achievement within the nation’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. This statistic constitutes nearly half of the overall 1,57,066 startups acknowledged under the ‘Startup India Initiative’.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has noted that this accomplishment highlights the vital role women play in fostering innovation and driving economic progress. The growing representation of women in leadership positions underscores their significant impact on the country’s entrepreneurial framework.
The Indian government has implemented various schemes designed to support women-led startups. These initiatives include:
- Financial assistance
- Mentorship opportunities
- Resources aimed at empowering female entrepreneurs
So far, through Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), a total of Rs 3,107 crore has been allocated to 149 women-led startups. Furthermore, the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) has provided Rs 227.12 crore in financing for 1,278 women-led startups since it was launched in April 2021.
Launched in April 2023, the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS) has secured Rs 24.6 crore in loans specifically for women-led enterprises, enhancing their financial confidence. The Startup India Initiative, which was established in 2016 by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), has significantly influenced India’s entrepreneurial environment. Additionally, exclusive measures have been taken, such as a 10% allocation from the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) specifically earmarked for women-led startups.
Women-led startups are thriving across more than 600 districts in India, reflecting the determination and vision of female entrepreneurs who are redefining industries and overcoming obstacles through innovative concepts. The government also facilitates Women Capacity Development Programme (WING) workshops, which serve as a platform for exchanging best practices, addressing challenges, and exploring successful business models.
