Eternal Light: The Life and Legacy of the 14th Dalai Lama

A new biography titled Eternal Light: The Life and Legacy of the 14th Dalai Lama is scheduled for release on 30 July 2026. Written by senior journalist Dr Arvind Yadav and published by Westland Books, this work is crafted with the personal blessings of His Holiness and will be available in English, Hindi, and Telugu. Pre-bookings commenced on 6 July 2026, coinciding with the spiritual leader’s 91st birthday.

A Unique Biographical Perspective

Numerous biographical accounts of the Dalai Lama have surfaced over the years, including his own autobiographical writings. What sets Eternal Light apart, as indicated by its publisher, is its emphasis on historical events that are often misunderstood, misrepresented, or inadequately documented. An earlier Hindi edition called Anashwar was released in November 2025 by Sarv Bhasha Trust. The English version from Westland Books is an elaborated adaptation of that initial work.

From a Stormy Birth in Tibet to the Potala Palace

The biography details the Dalai Lama’s life beginning with his birth on 6 July 1935 in the village of Taktser, Tibet. The book recounts that during a storm, as his mother Diki Tsering was attending to her daily duties, she entered labour, and the baby made his entrance into the world without a sound. His older sister, Tsering Dolma, helped to open one of his newborn eyes and provided his first nourishment in accordance with Tibetan customs. Shortly after his birth, a neighbour reportedly rushed to inform the family that a rainbow was arching over their home.

The narrative continues with the formal renaming ceremony on 24 November 1939, the enthronement at Potala Palace on 22 February 1940, and the moment he assumed political authority at the age of 15, leading up to the events that resulted in his exile in 1959.

The India Connection: From Nehru to Rajiv Gandhi

A significant aspect of the Dalai Lama biography is his relationship with India’s political figures. The book recounts his meeting with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru during the Buddha Jayanti celebrations in 1956, where he expressed his wish to stay in India. Nehru advised him to revert to Tibet and engage with the Seventeen-Point Agreement.

When Indira Gandhi was assassinated in October 1984, the Dalai Lama was en route from the United States to London. He was profoundly affected by the news, especially as he had planned to share a meal with her and philosopher J. Krishnamurti that afternoon. The biography highlights that he saw her successor, Rajiv Gandhi, as a compassionate leader who would continue to support the Tibetan community.

The Inspiration Behind the Book

Dr Arvind Yadav, a Hyderabad journalist and biographer, first met the Dalai Lama in 2002 and discussed his intention to write a biography. Reports indicate that the spiritual leader welcomed the idea and encouraged Yadav to include specific elements: his excellent dental health, his smooth, wrinkle-free skin, and the child-like spirit he carries within.

Minakshi Thakur, the publisher and editor at Westland Books, mentioned that the book reveals intriguing details from the Dalai Lama’s youth while rectifying misconceptions from previous accounts.

A Relevant Publication Amid Global Conversations

With its release on 30 July, Eternal Light not only provides insights into the Dalai Lama’s life but also aligns with ongoing global discussions about the preservation of Tibetan culture. The biography includes the Dalai Lama’s Five-Point Peace Plan, which he presented to the US Congress on 21 September 1987, advocating for Tibet to become a zone of non-violence and initiating negotiations regarding its future. For readers in India, the book provides an enriching perspective on over seventy years of interactions between the Tibetan exile community and India’s political landscape. Pre-orders are currently available in all major bookstores.
