BigBasket’s Growth in India’s Online Grocery Market

The competition in India’s online grocery market has intensified as platforms strive for scale, efficiency, and profitability. Despite strong demand, achieving profitability remains a challenge for many players. In this scenario, BigBasket showed slight growth in FY26, with its operating revenue exceeding Rs 8,000 crore, although its core B2C operations continued to struggle. The performance of the Tata Digital-backed company aligns with wider industry trends, where grocery delivery services are experiencing significant losses amid aggressive expansion.

Financial Performance of BigBasket

According to Tata Sons’ FY26 annual report, Innovative Retail Concepts, operating BigBasket’s consumer-facing segment, experienced a 7.7% revenue increase to Rs 8,223 crore in FY26, up from Rs 7,634 crore the year prior. Conversely, losses ballooned by 66% to Rs 3,073 crore from Rs 1,850 crore in the same timeframe.

Impact of Quick Commerce Shift

BigBasket’s losses have notably surged since its strategic shift towards quick commerce in August 2024. This pivot resulted in escalating operating costs, as the company incurs higher expenses related to logistics, dark stores, discounts, and customer retention strategies to remain competitive in the fast-evolving sector.

Performance of BigBasket’s B2B Operations

Meanwhile, BigBasket’s B2B division, Supermarket Grocery Supplies, which manages procurement and backend functions, reported steady revenue at Rs 2,298 crore in FY26, with losses remaining at Rs 102 crore during the fiscal year. Together, these two segments generated total revenue of Rs 10,521 crore in FY26, compared to Rs 9,861 crore in the previous year, with combined losses reaching Rs 3,175 crore.

Tata Digital’s Stake in BigBasket

Tata Digital, which secured a majority stake in BigBasket in 2021, continues to be the largest shareholder with an 84.23% stake. In contrast, BigBasket’s competitor Zepto achieved Rs 22,624 crore in revenue alongside a loss of Rs 5,905 crore in FY26, while quick commerce leader Blinkit reported Rs 15,664 crore in revenue and an adjusted EBITDA of Rs 102 crore in Q1 FY27.
