Uttam Bharat’s Festive Consumption Trends

The festive season marks a pivotal time for consumption in India. It is during this period that families tend to upgrade their appliances, invest in financial products, try new brands, and make discretionary purchases. Across Uttam Bharat—including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, which comprise over 620 million people—this behaviour is undergoing a substantial transformation. The region is witnessing a notable increase in consumer demand, with the consumer durable sector seeing a growth rate of 10-15%. Premium items like smartphones, air conditioners, and washing machines are expanding at a pace 1.3 times quicker than their mass-market counterparts. Fintech adoption in the area is rising at about 35% annually, and loan penetration is advancing 1.5 times faster than the industry’s average.

Premiumisation in Everyday Categories

The festive consumer is not only increasing their purchases but is also leaning towards higher-quality products. This is evident in various everyday categories, where numerous low-penetrated markets are experiencing significant volume growth, indicating a new phase of expansion. For example, liquid detergents have surged by 84%, hand wash liquids by 63%, and hand wash solutions by 34%. Sales of branded basmati rice have increased by 26%, while other categories such as hair colour, face wash, and breakfast cereals are still seeing steady growth. These are not trivial enhancements; they reflect a broad upgrade in household consumption habits across Uttam Bharat.

For marketers, this environment presents both opportunities and challenges. As consumers transition to higher-value categories, awareness emerges as a primary barrier to entry. Creating demand is essential before it can be effectively converted.

The Unmatched Reach of Television

Free-to-Air (FTA) General Entertainment Channels (GECs) hold a significant place in the media landscape of the region. FTA GECs reach about 83% of audiences throughout Uttam Bharat, delivering approximately 396 million viewers monthly across India, with 382 million in HSM and 187 million in Uttam Bharat specifically. JioStar’s FTA network, featuring channels like Star Utsav and COLORS Rishtey, has established itself as a market leader, capturing around 35% of the total FTA viewership. This scale becomes particularly crucial during festive times when purchase intent peaks and category switching rises.

Incremental Reach in Digital-First Planning

While digital platforms are central to contemporary marketing strategies, their reach varies significantly. Data shows that FTA audiences in Uttam Bharat are spending greater amounts of time watching television, leading to a substantial segment being excluded from purely digital campaigns. FTA GEC channels provide up to 1.2 times greater reach than the leading User-Generated Content (UGC) platform in the region. With similar investment levels, FTA can achieve nearly twice the campaign reach. In a fiercely competitive festive marketplace, this added reach often dictates whether a campaign fosters new demand or merely competes within established demand pools.

From Reach to Business Outcomes

Scale gains importance when they result in measurable outcomes. Audiences of Star Utsav exhibit clear signs of upward mobility. Their searching and purchasing behaviours resonate with the broader trend of premiumisation seen across Uttam Bharat, which positively influences campaign effectiveness.

Incorporating FTA GEC into Pay TV subscriptions enhances reach by 55% for beauty-related audiences, 50% for financial services, and 40% for the automotive sector. Campaigns on JioStar FTA have shown improvements across awareness, consideration, and purchasing intent.

For sectors such as BFSI, jewellery, and automotive, Star Utsav has achieved superior search conversion rates compared to other FTA channels. The data indicates a clear pattern: reach translates into action.

The Expanding Festive Opportunity

The festive opportunity in Uttam Bharat is widening due to rising incomes and evolving aspirations, though it is becoming increasingly competitive and fragmented. Consumers are moving towards higher quality across categories, with the premiumisation trend growing and Tier II and Tier III markets driving much of India’s consumption increase.

For marketers, achieving success will depend on selecting the correct platforms and engaging the right strategies rather than simply being present. In such an environment, television plays a pivotal role in fostering awareness and consideration during moments of high purchase intent. As Uttam Bharat transitions from volume-driven to value-driven consumption, JioStar’s FTA ecosystem, led by Star Utsav and COLORS Rishtey, serves as a vital link between rising aspirations and tangible business results. Festive growth will reward brands that generate demand ahead of visibility.
