Pine Labs: Reinventing POS Business Strategies for Growth

While investors concentrated on Pine Labs’ quarterly performance and future guidance, the company’s first earnings call since going public provided an in-depth look at the strategies driving its forthcoming growth phase. Beyond the primary figures, the fintech firm detailed new economic models for its point-of-sale business, indicated that its credit-processing division has grown into an almost Rs 100 crore annual revenue source, and shared plans to enhance gift card distribution through Blinkit and Zepto. The management also provided updates on its AI projects, new issuing solutions, and international growth, delivering fresh perspectives on how Pine Labs is evolving beyond its primary payments operations.

A New Playbook for POS Economics

Perhaps the most significant structural update shared during the earnings call concerns Pine Labs’ terminal operations. Historically, the company purchased POS devices and leased them to merchants to generate continuous rental income. This model is witnessing a transformation. Pine Labs indicated that nearly 25-30% of recent terminal installations will now request merchants to acquire the hardware upfront instead of the company retaining it on its balance sheet.

While this shift may reduce reported contribution margins due to the inherently low-margin nature of hardware sales, the management noted that this approach decreases depreciation, enhances cash flow efficiency, and results in a streamlined balance sheet. The company anticipates deploying 125,000-130,000 terminals this year, with the majority of network investments already completed.

A Hidden Rs 100 Cr Business

Another intriguing disclosure centred on Pine Labs’ issuing platform. Management announced that its credit issuing and acquiring processing segment has grown into an annual revenue stream of nearly Rs 100 crore, a figure not previously highlighted in public discussions. Currently, its issuing platform encompasses nearly 20 countries, advancing well beyond gift cards to include prepaid cards, forex cards, and open-loop payment products.

To broaden this division further, Pine Labs plans to introduce meal cards, fuel cards, and expense cards by October, along with launching direct-to-consumer prepaid offerings.

Gift Card Distribution Through Blinkit and Zepto

Pine Labs also disclosed that it has commenced the distribution of gift cards via Blinkit and Zepto, indicating that quick commerce is becoming a vital sales avenue for digital gifting. At the same time, the company is branching out into gaming by distributing Roblox gift cards and focusing on in-app purchases, which management perceives as another promising growth opportunity.

Interestingly, despite numerous analyst inquiries regarding gift cards, issuing practices, and distribution strategies, management did not reference breakage income, unredeemed gift cards, or associated accounting practices, opting instead to concentrate on processing, distribution, and the introduction of new products.

AI and Global Expansion Driving Pine Labs’ Next Phase

In line with these strategic adjustments, Pine Labs continues to emphasise its investments in AI and international markets. The firm remarked that nearly 90% of new code developed across various business divisions is now created using AI-assisted tools. It recently showcased what it deemed India’s first intelligent payment system, wherein AI agents managed a payment transaction using UPI mandates.

Globally, Pine Labs announced acquiring British Airways for its gift card platform, deploying 30,000 terminals with GCash in the Philippines, and expanding its operations in Singapore and the UAE. Even after reporting its first profitable year, Pine Labs persists in its growth investments, adding 500 sales personnel over the past six months to boost merchant acquisition and enterprise sales. Notably, the company did not mention hiring in engineering or technology.

Taken collectively, the earnings call illustrated Pine Labs’ efforts to expand beyond its core payment services through innovative POS economics, a burgeoning issuing platform, AI integrations, and global expansion. However, one area was noticeably absent from discussions. Despite extensive conversations about gift cards, issuing, and processing, there was no mention of breakage income, unredeemed gift card balances, or associated accounting strategies. Instead, the focus remained firmly on novel distribution channels such as Blinkit and Zepto, processing enhancements, and the rollout of new prepaid offerings.
