Policybazaar’s Insurance Growth Strategy in a Post-GST Environment

The enhanced demand for insurance linked to GST seems to be diminishing, shifting the spotlight onto how Policybazaar can maintain its growth once the decline in insurance costs stabilises. While PB Fintech recorded a 41% increase in insurance premium during Q1 FY27, the firm is now concentrating on generating new demand within health and term insurance sectors while expanding its recurring revenue through renewals. During the Q1 FY27 earnings call, PB Fintech’s management indicated that demand was robust in Q3 and Q4; however, the GST-inspired boost began to wane in Q1. They expressed that the company would be fortunate if this trend persisted into Q2 and characterised current insurance demand as being exceptionally low.

Policybazaar’s Focus on New Market Segments

While Policybazaar’s core new insurance premium has continued to rise, the company is also aiming to stimulate demand within underrepresented categories. Recent initiatives target diverse customer segments, including senior citizens, self-employed individuals, housewives, those with pre-existing conditions, and younger buyers. Furthermore, the firm has launched campaigns designed to increase awareness regarding health and term insurance.

Importance of Renewal Income

A significant counterbalance is the revenue from renewals. Renewal and trail income surged by 38% year-on-year on a rolling 12-month basis, reaching Rs 1,003 crore, thereby providing Policybazaar with a more substantial recurring revenue source. This becomes paramount if new insurance demand declines following the GST boost.

Financial Performance of PB Fintech

For Q1 FY27, PB Fintech’s total insurance premium amounted to Rs 8,372 crore, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 41%, while the protection premium, which encompasses health and term insurance, experienced 53% growth. The company announced revenues of Rs 1,888 crore along with a PAT of Rs 163 crore for the quarter.

Leveraging Technology for Improved Conversion

The company is also harnessing technology to enhance conversion rates, moving away from relying solely on increased traffic or customer acquisition. During the earnings call, management mentioned that Policybazaar handles approximately 21 lakh calls daily, processing calls that last over 60 seconds through AI across seven Indian languages. Their AI systems evaluate more than 65 parameters in real time, while pre-issuance checks involve deepfake detection, KYC matching, and liveness assessments.

Paisabazaar: A Secondary Growth Catalyst

Beyond insurance, Paisabazaar is identified as another avenue for growth. It has achieved a loan disbursal annual run rate of Rs 17,500 crore, with over 70% of disbursals directed towards existing customers. The platform utilises its proprietary risk filter to decline approximately 9% of applicants who have already been approved by lenders, targeting a customer base known for higher early delinquency.

Future Prospects for PB Fintech

The overarching question for PB Fintech centres on its ability to sustain growth in the insurance sector once the demand surge caused by GST dissipates. According to insights shared during the earning call, the company’s strategy now seems to rely on a blend of renewal income, greater penetration in health and term insurance, improved conversion through advanced AI technologies, and cross-selling of financial products to their existing clientele.
