Ola Electric Expands Timeline for Battery Manufacturing Incentives
Ola Electric has received an extended timeline under the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for advanced chemistry cells (ACC). This update grants the company’s battery operations a new five-year opportunity to qualify for incentives amounting to Rs 7,240 crore. The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has adjusted the timelines for Ola Cell Technologies (OCT), the fully owned subsidiary of Ola Electric responsible for the development of battery cell manufacturing.
Revised Timeline and Capacity Goals
Under the new schedule, Ola Electric has until December 2026 to achieve its initial installed-capacity target of 6 GWh. The company anticipates hitting this milestone by the end of the current quarter, prior to the revised deadline. Currently, Ola boasts an installed cell manufacturing capacity of 2.5 GWh, with an additional 3.5 GWh in the process of installation. The firm has a total allocation of 20 GWh under the ACC PLI framework.
Access to PLI Incentives
The new approval also allows Ola Electric to take advantage of the PLI incentives throughout the next five years, extending to the calendar year 2031. The disbursement of these incentives will occur on a quarterly basis, commencing from the next quarter.
Impact on Business Strategy
Ola Electric’s founder and CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, noted that this revised timeline would enhance the financial viability of its cell operations. He mentioned that the company had not included PLI incentives in its business forecasts after failing to meet the initial deadlines. The firm is now aiming to scale up towards its full 20 GWh allocation while concurrently developing its battery cell business.
Focus on Battery Chemistries and Localisation
The company is working on cells that utilise both nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistries. Ola Electric is also dedicated to boosting the localisation of battery materials, enhancing manufacturing efficiencies, and establishing closed-loop processes for material recovery.
Future Plans and Energy Product Roadmap
In addition to these developments, Ola Electric is gearing up to reveal its comprehensive energy product roadmap at its annual Sankalp event, which will feature products such as Shakti and Mahashakti. The adjusted PLI timeline arrives as Ola Electric aims to diversify its operations beyond electric scooters and expand its footprint in the broader energy sector, particularly in battery and energy storage solutions.
