As dawn breaks over the sacred river, countless pilgrims are gearing up for the Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest spiritual congregations globally, which is set to take place in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, 2025. Occurring every 12 years, the sacred meeting point of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers transforms into a spiritual hub that attracts millions of devotees. The Maha Kumbh is far more than just an event; it symbolises faith, community, and the enduring essence of tradition.
In 2025, this ancient gathering will incorporate modern technology, enhancing the pilgrim experience with a focus on comfort and sustainability. Attendees will be provided with a Kumbh Mela mobile app, a practical resource designed to navigate the expansive grounds while enriching the spiritual journey.
Highlights
Technological Innovations
Powered by AI-driven navigation systems, the app employs GPS technology to offer real-time directions to key locations, including:
– Bathing ghats
– Temples
– Prayer areas
– Medical assistance stations
The app will also aid visitors in locating their designated campsites and recommend optimal routes for both their spiritual bathing and exploration of nearby food stalls. By alleviating logistical concerns, the app aims to allow pilgrims to fully engage in their spiritual experience, making their journey smoother and more fulfilling.
Crowd Management and Safety
With an estimated turnout of 40 crore participants, authorities are adopting AI-enhanced surveillance systems to guarantee safety and efficient crowd control. More than 2,700 CCTV cameras, including 328 equipped with artificial intelligence, will monitor the Mela grounds.
These sophisticated cameras can assess crowd density and predict movement patterns in real-time. They will provide immediate alerts to authorities, preventing overcrowding and facilitating smooth navigation for visitors. Furthermore, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) wristbands will be given to pilgrims, allowing for real-time tracking to ensure safety and assist in promptly locating missing persons.
To enhance communication, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched “Kumbh Sah’AI’yak”, an AI-enabled chatbot available in 11 languages. This accessible tool offers pilgrims real-time information about event schedules, directions, and historical insights, significantly enriching their overall experience.
Virtual Experiences and Accessibility
In recognition of the enormous number of attendees, organisers are introducing immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences. Through dedicated VR stations, pilgrims can engage in notable events such as the Ganga Aarti or the Peshwai procession from any location worldwide, enhancing accessibility while alleviating physical infrastructure pressure.
Drone Technology and Aerial Surveillance
Drones will play a pivotal role in aerial surveillance to bolster security and effectively monitor crowd movements. Additionally, a spectacular drone show featuring over 2,000 drones will grace the skies, depicting tales from Hindu mythology and showcasing the spiritual significance of Prayagraj, thus adding an artistic dimension to the technological advancements.
Sustainability Initiatives
In a commendable step towards environmental stewardship, the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 will prohibit single-use plastics. Biodegradable alternatives, made from materials like bamboo and jute, will be introduced to lessen the festival’s environmental impact. This initiative sets a higher standard for large-scale events, encouraging eco-friendly practices.
To further streamline waste management efforts, the government will deploy AI-powered waste segregation units. These units will leverage sensors and artificial intelligence to categorise waste as recyclable, biodegradable, or non-biodegradable, enhancing the waste management process and promoting recycling initiatives.
