OYO Discontinues Check-Ins for Unmarried Couples: A Major Policy Shift

Travel booking leader OYO has introduced a new check-in policy for its partner hotels, initiated in Meerut. This policy, effective from this year, means that unmarried couples will no longer be permitted to check in. As part of the updated guidelines, all couples must provide valid proof of their relationship at the check-in point, including for online reservations.

OYO has granted its partner hotels discretionary power to refuse couple bookings based on their judgment, in accordance with local social sensibilities, the company stated. The directive has been enacted immediately for partner hotels in Meerut, with potential plans for expansion to additional cities based on feedback, according to sources familiar with the changes.

OYO has acknowledged past feedback from civil society organisations, particularly in Meerut, which called for measures to address this matter. Furthermore, residents from several other cities have requested that OYO prevents unmarried couples from checking in at their properties, it was reported.

Statements from OYO

Pawas Sharma, Region Head for OYO North India, informed PTI, “OYO is dedicated to maintaining safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect personal freedoms and individual liberties, we also acknowledge our duty to collaborate with law enforcement and local civil groups in the communities where we operate. We will regularly assess this policy and its effects.”

This initiative is part of OYO’s broader programme aimed at changing outdated perceptions and promoting itself as a brand that offers a safe environment for families, students, business travellers, religious groups, and solo visitors.

– Promote repeat bookings
– Enhance customer trust and loyalty

Additionally, OYO has rolled out nationwide initiatives, such as:
– Organising joint seminars on safe hospitality with police and hotel partners
– Blacklisting hotels allegedly engaging in immoral practices
– Taking action against unauthorised hotels misusing the OYO brand
