May Mobility, a pioneer in autonomous vehicle technology, showcased its latest innovation at CES 2025: an electric, self-driving minibus developed in collaboration with European electric bus manufacturer Tecnobus.

Based in Ann Arbor, May Mobility provides both on-demand and scheduled autonomous shuttle services across campuses and planned communities. Currently, its fleet comprises 40 retrofitted Toyota Sienna minivans, equipped with May’s proprietary software and hardware self-driving stack, accommodating up to eight passengers. The new Tecnobus vehicles, expected to complement the Sienna fleet by late 2026, boast a capacity of 30 passengers, including those using wheelchairs.

The Tecnobus minibus is engineered specifically for urban transit, corporate campuses, airports, and planned communities. It features swappable batteries that significantly reduce downtime. Furthermore, the company has confirmed that the upcoming bus will be compliant for operation in Europe and Canada.

StartupSuperb has inquired about the number of these buses May Mobility plans to integrate into its fleet and the specific markets in which they will be deployed.

Currently, May Mobility operates shuttle services with a human driver in various locations including Arlington, Texas; Detroit, Michigan; and Grand Rapids, Minnesota, among other cities. The company also has a notable presence in Japan, where telecom giant NTT has licensed May’s technology for an autonomous vehicle pilot programme in Nagoya. Additionally, May is actively deploying services in Tokyo and Fukuoka.

In a further step towards autonomy, May has recently initiated a pilot programme featuring a small-scale driverless shuttle deployment in Ann Arbor, testing its capabilities with no human driver present.
