Recently, Honey, a PayPal-owned service known for providing coupon codes, has been mired in controversy. It has been accused of secretly generating affiliate income by altering the characteristics of product links shared by content creators. The core issue revolves around the mechanics of affiliate links and how the user who completes a purchase is attributed profits.

Steven Tey, a former employee of Vercel, believes his open-source URL shortening and link-tracking platform Dub.co can rectify this issue by eliminating the need for coupon codes and integrating them directly into the links.

The company is developing an attribution and affiliate product that allows creators to generate their own links, ensuring users receive discounts only when they use those specific links.

Tey articulated a vision to enhance transparency in attribution for both creators and businesses, aiming to prevent incidents similar to the Honey controversy, where attribution can be unduly claimed by others.

Dub.co was initially launched by Tey while he was at Vercel as a URL shortening tool. He eventually incorporated link tracking to gain insights into the products Vercel was releasing. Over time, Dub.co evolved into a comprehensive SaaS solution. Tey departed from Vercel towards the end of 2023 and established the company concurrently.

He explained that there was a significant challenge in monitoring attribution to assess revenue sources effectively. At Vercel, there was uncertainty about how their developer advocacy efforts, such as creating articles and tutorials, translated into revenue, which inspired the creation of Dub.

After launching Dub.co, Tey realised that the affiliate marketing sector was outdated and lacking in customisation tools. This insight revealed a larger potential for link tracking beyond merely shortening URLs.

While the primary revenue for the company comes from businesses and enterprises, it also provides a complimentary plan for individuals to shorten and track links. Notably, Dub.co is collaborating with the Malaysian government to develop an open-source link shortening and tracking system for their agencies. Additionally, companies such as Twilio leverage the SaaS hosted version of Dub.co, tailoring it to monitor their links, campaigns, and events. YouTube channels like Huberman Labs also employ Dub’s solutions to track affiliate activities.

Dub.co introduced a new product, Conversions, designed to monitor real-time clicks that result in sign-ups or sales. This enhancement allows companies to track detailed metrics, including customer acquisition costs, retention rates, and lifetime value, thereby providing deeper insights into their marketing effectiveness. Furthermore, Dub.co can integrate seamlessly with platforms like Shopify and Stripe to improve conversion tracking.

Tey indicated that although Dub.co incorporates AI functionalities, it does not intend for these to overshadow its core offerings. Currently, users can utilise AI for generating custom reports or obtaining recommendations for titles and descriptions for various links. The startup also employs AI for automatic categorisation of links.

Joseph Jacks, founder of OSS Capital, remarked that Dub.co stands out among competitors due to its open-source model, enhanced user experience, and superior design.

The company has successfully secured $2 million from a range of investors, including OSS Capital, Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch, Balaji Srinivasan, and the founders of the design service Framer, Jorn van Dijk and Koen Bok. Other notable backers include Soleio, a former Facebook designer, an early supporter of Vercel, Perplexity, and Figma, along with Peer Richardson, CEO of Cal.com.

Jacks stated that links are fundamental to the web and, when combined with attribution, the potential market is vast, amounting to tens of billions. He added that by transforming short links into attribution mechanisms, Dub can assist marketers in determining the critical question of return on investment in their marketing expenditures, supported by tangible conversion data.
