World Bank Forecasts India’s Economic Growth at 6.7% Over the Next Two Fiscal Years

According to the latest growth projections from the World Bank for South Asia, India’s economic development is expected to maintain a consistent pace of 6.7% annually for the two financial years beginning in April 2025. The economic growth in South Asia is predicted to elevate to 6.2% in 2025-26, primarily driven by robust growth in India, as reported by the World Bank on Thursday.

The World Bank emphasised that:

  • India’s growth is anticipated to remain steady at 6.7% per annum for the two fiscal years commencing in April 2025.
  • The services sector is expected to experience continuous growth, while the manufacturing sector is poised for recovery, aided by government initiatives designed to improve the business environment.
  • Investment growth is forecasted to be stable, with a decline in public investment balanced by an increase in private investment.

For the fiscal year 2024/25 (April 2024 to March 2025), India’s growth is projected to moderate to 6.5%, attributed to reduced investment and sluggish performance in manufacturing. Nevertheless, private consumption growth has demonstrated resilience, largely due to improved rural incomes and a rebound in agricultural output, as highlighted by the World Bank.

Excluding India, growth in the region is anticipated to rise to 3.9% in 2024. This enhancement is mainly as a result of recoveries in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, supported by improved macroeconomic policies aimed at addressing prior economic challenges.

Regarding Bangladesh, the report indicated:

  • Political instability mid-2024 adversely affected economic activities and decreased investor confidence.
  • Supply chain issues, primarily caused by energy shortages and import restrictions, disrupted industrial operations and led to increasing price pressures.

The growth forecast for the region, excluding India, is set to strengthen to 4% in 2025 and reach 4.3% in 2026. However, the outlook for this year has been slightly downgraded compared to the June estimates, mainly due to uncertainties regarding Bangladesh’s economic and policy climate.

In Bangladesh, growth is expected to decline to 4.1% in FY2024/25 (July 2024 to June 2025) before bouncing back to 5.4% in FY2025/26. Due to increased political uncertainty, investment and industrial activities are predicted to remain subdued in the short term.
