Nation Can’t Sacrifice Cybersecurity Resources, Even from Allies: IT Secretary

India is unable to accept cybersecurity resources from even allied nations, as it poses a risk to the nation’s security and sovereignty, a senior government official stated on Thursday. During a roundtable discussion with startups, organised by the Start-up Policy Forum under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Secretary S. Krishnan emphasised the importance of funding for startups, particularly in the growth and later stages, especially in the deep tech sector, such as cybersecurity.

Key Points from S. Krishnan’s Remarks

  • Independence in Cybersecurity: Krishnan highlighted the necessity of having an independent resource for cybersecurity within the country. It is essential for safeguarding national sovereignty.
  • Threat of Importing Resources: The act of importing cybersecurity solutions creates a potential security threat, even when sourced from friendly nations. It is crucial for the nation to develop its own comprehensive cybersecurity capacity.
  • Financial Support for Startups: The need for adequate financing in later-stage startups is vital for developing capabilities in cybersecurity and other deep tech areas, such as artificial intelligence and quantum technology.
  • Public Accountability: Krishnan acknowledged the government’s responsibility to manage public funds prudently, given that all citizens contribute through taxes. Transparency in the allocation and spending of money is necessary.
  • Challenges with Government Processes: Startups may perceive government processes as overly rigid, yet they must adhere to certain regulations and tests. Additionally, multiple ministries operating startup programmes often lead to overlapping functions.
  • Multiple Funding Channels: Engagement from various government departments at both central and state levels offers several financing options. However, it can also result in startups consuming significant time pursuing funds across different initiatives.
