India is on the brink of establishing its inaugural Artificial Intelligence university in Maharashtra, as announced by the state’s Information Technology Minister, Ashish Shelar. The university aims to lead advancements in AI research and development, facilitating innovative AI solutions for governance and industry while preparing a workforce equipped for the future. A dedicated task force, comprising experts from a range of technological disciplines, is spearheading the planning of this pioneering initiative in the nation.
Maharashtra’s AI university will serve as a focal point for excellence in the fields of AI and related disciplines. This university is designed to encourage substantial research and development, thereby enhancing the quality of education in AI. The task force, including specialists from diverse sectors, has convened on two occasions and is currently in the process of finalising the foundational blueprint for the institution.
The goal of Maharashtra’s AI university is to augment AI-driven solutions that benefit both governance and industry. The university will also focus on the development of skills, technological advancement, and formulation of policy. It signifies an effort to establish Maharashtra as a prominent hub for AI education and innovation, as emphasized by IT Minister Ashish Shelar.
Maharashtra AI University Task Force
A task force has been established for the strategic planning and execution of the university project, as confirmed by Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar. This group will consist of experts from academia, industry, and governmental bodies.
The task force will be chaired by Shri S.V.R. Srinivasan, the principal secretary of the Information Technology department. Members include directors from IIT Mumbai, IIT Powai, IIM Mumbai, and NASSCOM, along with representatives from companies such as L&T. Additionally, notable figures such as Dr. Anil Kakodkar and Naren Kachru from Google India, Bhuvan Lodha from Mahindra Group, and Dr. Rajan Velukarand, Vice-Chancellor of Atlas Skill University, will be involved. Experts from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, the Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission, and the Data Security Council of India will also play a role in this task force.
Aligning with National Initiatives
The establishment of this university is in alignment with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’. The initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to transform Maharashtra into a center for technology and innovation, as highlighted by the minister.
This project resonates with the BJP’s electoral manifesto, which underscored the importance of leveraging technology for developmental purposes, according to Ashish Shelar.
The AI university is expected to emerge as a centre of excellence that will foster collaboration among industry, academia, and government. This endeavour aims not only to position Maharashtra as a global frontrunner in AI but also to significantly contribute to India’s technological progress.
