Perplexity AI Gaining Attention Over Instagram
Perplexity AI is becoming a key player in the AI search engine sector, and Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of this innovative platform, recently initiated an interesting conversation. He highlighted the increasing amount of screen time users are dedicating to Perplexity AI as compared to Instagram.
Srinivas responded to a user on X who shared a screen time snapshot. The user, known as @thesilverbackg, indicated they spent 1 hour and 43 minutes on Perplexity AI, while only 50 minutes were allocated to Instagram. This change in user preference reflects a significant trend amid the global rise of artificial intelligence.
In his reply on X, Srinivas provided a pointed critique of Instagram, stating, “Good for the world for people to spend more time on Perplexity than Instagram.”
User Sentiments Align with CEO
Many users supported Srinivas’ sentiments in their responses to the tweet. The discussion on X, previously known as Twitter, has signalled a larger shift where individuals are looking for more meaningful digital experiences rather than engaging with traditional social media. One user remarked, “I couldn’t agree more, Aravind. People diving deeper into Perplexity is a sign that we’re moving beyond superficial engagements.”
Differing Perspectives on Usage
Contrarily, another user, @DmitryKatson, offered a different perspective. He mentioned having noticed a pattern on his son’s laptop that indicated YouTube was being accessed through Perplexity, suggesting that direct access to YouTube was somehow restricted.
Perplexity AI operates using advanced AI technologies to function as a search engine that delivers responses derived from various web sources. This method of interaction has drawn praise for facilitating deeper conversations compared with the more superficial exchanges often found on other social media platforms.
Instagram’s Content Issues
On the same day, several reports revealed that Instagram users experienced an increase in violent and inappropriate content, despite having activated the Sensitive Content Control feature. There is speculation whether this situation resulted from a glitch or a modification in the algorithm.
In response to the growing concerns, Meta issued an apology, indicating that they resolved an “error” that led to certain Instagram users encountering a surge of violent and graphic content in their personalised “Reels” feed. A spokesperson for Meta stated in a report from CNBC, “We have fixed an error that caused some users to see content in their Instagram Reels feed that should not have been recommended. We apologise for the mistake.”
