Backline is a pioneering security startup that employs AI agents for the automated resolution of security gaps, emerging from stealth mode with a $9 million seed funding round led by StageOne Ventures.
This marks the third venture for Maor Goldberg, co-founder and CEO of the company. Prior to this, he co-founded Whitebox Security, which was acquired by SailPoint in 2015. He also founded Apolicy, a container security startup, which Sysdig acquired in 2021. In 2024, Goldberg left Sysdig to establish Backline alongside Eran Leib (chief customer officer) and Aviad Chen (VP of R&D).
The concept behind Backline addresses the current overload of security alerts faced by developers and security teams.
Security teams depend on engineers to address vulnerabilities and collaborate with platform engineering teams to rectify misconfigurations.
Goldberg emphasised that security teams are perpetually seeking assistance from other departments, typically without sufficient time to address these concerns.
Backline aims to bridge this gap by integrating notifications from a variety of security tools and beginning the process of remediation. The AI agents evaluate the vulnerability, propose a solution, enact the necessary adjustments, and subsequently test the results.
Testing is a vital component, according to Backline, inspired by formal method approaches used by hardware teams to validate their products. Goldberg highlighted that establishing trust with potential users hinges upon this thorough testing.
The company utilises off-the-shelf large language models (LLMs) for their operations. Goldberg explained that their intellectual property revolves around addressing high-priority problems left unresolved by security scanning tools, promoting collaboration and the proper inclusion of relevant stakeholders in the process.
Backline envisions expanding its scope beyond merely remediating software vulnerabilities. The company plans to address software supply chain challenges, including identifying exposed secrets, resolving identity and access issues, and conducting static application security testing.
Tal Slobodkin, managing partner at StageOne Ventures, mentioned that security backlogs are a major concern keeping Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) awake at night. He stated that Backline’s extensive cybersecurity knowledge, combined with its vision for autonomous remediation, offers a significant opportunity for improvement in remediation speed, noting that no organization claims to have their security backlog completely managed, indicating the magnitude of this challenge.
Evolution Equity Partners and Gradient also participated in the seed funding round.
